Mark Martin Scores Sprint Cup Pole At Phoenix

Mark Martin had the fastest car in Phoenix Saturday, as he picked up the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway in qualifying.

Martin turned in a lap in 26.313 seconds, 136.815 mph to put his Aaron’s sponsored No. 55 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota in the top starting position.

“I wanted it so much for MWR and for Rodney (Childers, crew chief) , because that guy’s heart and soul is into this thing like I can’t believe,” Martin said of winning the pole.  “It’s really, really, really going to be fun to work with Rodney.   I had not paid any attention to him and did not realize what an incredible, committed talent that he his. I look forward to seeing him get a chanc to hopefully shine with an old guy behind the wheel.”

For Martin, it marks his second pole in 31 races at Phoenix, with the first coming on April 18, 2009.  He would go on to lead 157 laps in that event, scoring the victory.

It’s Martin’s 52nd career pole in 832 Sprint Cup races.

Tony Stewart turned in the second fastest lap in qualifying, with Regan Smith set to roll off third, Jimmie Johnson fourth and Juan Pablo Montoya fifth.

Ryan Newman, Greg Biffle, Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, and Kasey Kahne round out the top ten.

Josh Wise was the fastest qualifying rookie, turning in the 33rd fastest time.  One driver, Timmy Hill, failed to qualify.
