For the second night in a row, Kenny Wallace charged to a UMP Modified victory at the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals on Thursday at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, FL, while Craig Dollansky earned some redemption from last year’s heartbreak by capturing the UNOH All Star sprint car feature.
Wallace started fifth and quickly powered to the front, passing Michael Long on lap five and pulling away to a 1.076-second victory over Long. Ty Dillon was third, followed by Ken Schrader and Mike Wedelstadt.
“Keeping my car rolling on the outside and trying to get by lapped traffic,” Wallace said. “My crew chief said I had a straightaway lead and I had to smoke through that lapped traffic as quick as I could because Michael Long is the winningest UMP driver in the world, he’s the man, so when I passed him I went, ‘Oh my lord.’ He doesn’t ever give up. The key to winning was never give up, keep digging.”
After leading 51 laps of main event competition in 2011’s event, yet missing out on a top-10 finish because of mechanical failures, Dollansky left little doubt on Thursday night in the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions feature. He started eighth and darted forward to battle Daryn Pittman, sliding to the front on lap 10 and holding on to the checkered flag.
Pittman was second with Danny Lasoski, Greg Hodnett and Brad Sweet rounding out the top five.
“It was a great win,” said Dollansky, of Elk River, Minn. “We got a good start, then we had a restart and we had a good pace. I got a good run on (Pittman) on the outside and I just tried to run our race and hold our line. We got to lapped traffic, got through a few lapped cars and just tried to settle in and make sure we got to the end with our tires and fuel load.”
There were 77 DIRTcar UMP Modifieds and 40 UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars in the pits on Thursday night.
