Jeff Fultz was in the right place at the right time to get the win Saturday night in the North/South Shootout 100 Presented by WearCrete Diamond Concrete Polishing, which was part of the famed 9th Annual North/South Shootout presented in loving memory of Charles Kepley at Caraway Speedway in Sophia, NC.
It was Fultz’s second win in the prestigious event. Fultz won in 2009 when the event was help at Concord Speedway.
The event started with Ryan Blaney claiming the WearCrete Racing Fast Qualifier Award Saturday afternoon after practice and qualifying were canceled on Friday because of rain. Blaney drew the maximum invert of eight placing Zane Ziener on the pole. Ziener took the early lead, but that lasted only three laps when Ziener spun after contact from behind by Nate Caruth, both cars were sent to the tail giving the lead to Chase Elliott.
Elliott held the lead until lap 24 when Blaney worked his way underneath Elliott to grab the lead and was followed closely by Ross Kenseth who moved into second. Bubba Pollard tried to follow Blaney and Kenseth underneath Elliott, when both cars came together sending them both hard into the turn three wall with Elliott up on his side for a while. Both cars suffered extensive damage which ended Elliott’s day, Pollard manage to make repairs while losing laps in the pits, but did get back out and run some laps and finish the race.
On the next restart a car got loose in the middle of the pack causing a huge pile up on the front-stretch involving several cars and causing a second red flag for the clean-up of all the cars involved. With the two red flags with extensive clean-ups and with several cars damaged, the decision was made to cut the race to 50 laps instead of the planned 100 laps.
Blaney continued to lead following the events restart with Kenseth in hot pursuit. Kenseth tried low and high to make a pass with no luck, but went in hard underneath Blaney in turn two on lap 37 making contact and washing both cars up the race track. Both drivers held on to their cars, but Jeff Fultz made a great move underneath both cars to grab the lead. Fultz had to hold off a hard charging Blaney at the end to get the win.
“It’s really great to get this win,” remarked a joyful Fultz in victory lane. “I won this event two years ago, but it’s awesome to come here to Caraway and get this one over some very tough competition especially since my car owner’s business is sponsoring the event!”
Kenseth finished in third. Austin Kochenash finished in fourth in his first ever CRA Super Series event. Randy Gentry finished in fifth place, his highest ever CRA Super Series finish. Fultz won the AR Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award for his pass to get the lead around Blaney and Kenseth. Blaney claimed the RaceTrailerSales.com Halfway bonus.
Elliott had a big enough point lead that all he needed to do was start the event to be crowned the inaugural CRA National Super Late Model Champion, which combined a drivers best four event finishes in the four CRA Super Series Southern Tour events and their best four finishes in the CRA Super Series Northern Tour events during the 2011 season. CRA first reported Saturday night that Blaney had claimed the Drivers’ Championship for the CRA Super Series Southern Tour, but upon further review of the points on Monday, it was determined that Bubba Pollard was actually the 2011 CRA Super Series Southern Tour Drivers Champion. WearCrete Racing, owned by Curtis Venable, won the CRA Super Series Southern Tour Owners Championship with drivers Jeff Fultz and Daniel Hemric.
