Dan Wheldon, the two-time and defending Indianapolis 500 champion, lost his life due to a racing accident that occurred on the 13th lap of the Izod IndyCar season finale Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Wheldon’s car was caught up in a massive 15 car accident in the second turn. His car became airborne, striking the outside wall.
The race was red flagged from that point on. Wheldon was transported via air ambulance to an area hospital.

Wheldon was a winner of 16 IndyCar events in a career that spanned 10 years, including this year’s Indianapolis 500. He was 33 years of age.
