Professional dirt late model driver Clint “Cat Daddy” Smith returned to his home track,  New Senoia Raceway in Cordele, GA for the first time in over twenty-five years this past weekend for the Senoia Summer Nationals II.

The four-time Southern All-Stars Dirt Late Model champion stole the headlines winning Saturday night’s late model feature.  Smith dropped early from Friday night’s opening round after running among the top three, but Saturday night captured the pole position and then led wire to wire for the victory.

Other weekend winners included Terry Gray, the Bartlett Bullet, in Saturday night’s winged outlaw sprint car feature while Sport Allen picked up the laurels on Friday night.  Late Model hot shot “Racin Jason” Williams picked up a feature win on Friday along with Stephen Hill in the Mini Stocks.  Dusty Jones claimed the top spot in the Mini Stocks on Saturday night while Marcus Caswell and Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran clean swept the weekend racing card in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets and Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks respectively.

Senoia’s Clint Smith returned to the track that is only minutes from his home to claim Saturday night’s $1000-to-win late model feature race.  Smith nabbed the pole position after qualifying for the top spot with a lap speed of just under 98 miles per hour.  In the feature race he shot out to the lead never looking back and bested track points leader Racin Jason Williams of Locust Grove.  Senoia’s Joe Armistead, Jr. ran third with Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher fourth and Phenix City, Alabama’s Lavon Sparks fifth.

“It feels good to come back to this track for the first time since the eighties,” said an elated Smith in victory lane.  “The track is only three-quarters of a mile from home.  Now we will see if we can get some super late model racing here again.”

Friday night’s late model feature was a wild one.  Colbert’s Kenny Collins found himself in a fierce battle for the lead with Armistead.  The two raced each other hard for the first twenty laps of the contest with Armistead trying to make a run on the inside.  Armistead made it up along the rear quarter panel of Collins on several laps before clipping him in turn one on lap 21.  Both cars slid up the banking hitting the outside retaining wall.

“Racin Jason” Williams benefited from the altercation, inheriting the lead with only four circuits remaining.  Williams would roll on to his tenth win of the season ahead of Lavon Sparks, Ellenwood’s Mike Head and Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris.

The United Sprint Car Series Winged Outlaw Sprint Cars were the scheduled headliner of the weekend being outshined only by Smith’s return to the 3/8ths mile clay oval.  Friday night’s feature race saw Florida’s Sport Allen top the field of seventeen sprinters.  Tennessee’s Terry Gray could not catch Allen through lapped traffic settling for second while Winder’s Brian Thomas ran third.  Friday night’s top five was rounded out by North Carolina’s Johnny Bridges and Houschton’s Matt Linder.

Saturday night’s run for the alcohol burning rockets on wheels saw Gray capture his second career victory on the New Senoia Raceway clay surface.  The USCS standout has won a few sprint car races on the old asphalt surface as well.  Gray held off 18-year-old female driver Morgan Turpen for the win.  Turpen was the fastest car on the track for the double header weekend as officials clocked her at speeds in excess of 107 miles per hour, but she could not maneuver lapped traffic quick enough to catch Gray for the hardware.  Linder came home third with Bridges fourth and Allen fifth.

The USCS Mini Sprint division made it’s first appearance at the track and ran both features without a caution.  The 600cc motorcycle engine powered race cars brought drivers from six states and saw a pair of drivers capture checkered flags.

Friday night’s round one was dominated by North Carolina’s Justin Lineman.  He cruised to the victory ahead of Mississippi’s Bobby Zaiontz and fellow North Carolinian Brian Roseman.

On Saturday night, Zaiontz made the proper adjustments to his mount and bested Lineman, Pembroke’s Ron Bishop, Roseman and Sugar Hill’s Sam Williams.

In the Mini Stock division, LaGrange’s Stephen Hill and Dusty Jones won the special weekend feature races.  Hill took home the victory on Friday night after a hard fought battle with Jones.

Saturday night’s race was all Jones until the final few laps when Barnesville’s Gary Parker came up to challenge.  Jones victory on Saturday night was his tenth of the season in the four cylinder stock car division.

“The car just has been working real good this year,” said Jones afterwards.  “We made some adjustments for the drier track and they worked.”

There were a pair of clean sweeps was placed in the Senoia Summer Nationals record books.  In the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Carrollton’s Clifton “Hog Head” Moran post his fourteenth and fifteenth wins of the season.  Moran topped Newnan’s Rusty ‘Rocketman’ Johnson both nights while Brooks’ Mike Jenkins finished third on Friday night and Wilson Boozer claimed the show spot on Saturday.

Marcus Caswell claimed both of the feature victories in the Newnan Bonding B Cadet class.  Caswell made easy work of it both nights against short fields.  Fifteen-year-old Corey Payton missed Friday night’s double header opening round, but was back on track Saturday night posting the runner-up spot to Caswell.  The Newnan high school student is running second in the points this year.

New Senoia Raceway will take Labor Day weekend off and will return to racing action on Saturday, September 10 offering race fans a treat with double features on the race card.  For more information, visit www.newsenoiaraceway.com.
