Despite the fact Hartwell, Georgia’s Frankie Beard has had the most wins in the FASTRAK Late Model division at Hartwell Speedway with a whopping 10 out of 19, he has spent the entire season chasing down Grant Jordan for the points lead.
On the other end of the spectrum, with zero wins this season Jordan’s consistent and cool manner has allowed him to maintain a slight point lead over Beard.
But that all came to a screeching halt this Saturday. With the points season coming to an end at Hartwell Speedway in Hartwell, Georgia, it was an all or nothing night for most, as all seven divisions competed for double points.
Beard, who has had the luck of the Irish with countless pole positions, once again put on a clinic how to get around the 3/8 mile clay oval, ensuring his front row staring position, while another Bowman native, Chris Cape, would take the outside pole in his Vanna #118 machine.
At the drop of the green, Cape would move to the inside while Beard drifted high, leaving Cape with the lead out of turn two. But before Cape could seal the deal a caution would come out causing a double file restart.
On the restart it would be a drag race for the first two laps between Cape and Beard battling fender to fender for the lead. Eventually, Beard would make his move to the front and quickly separate himself from the rest of the field. Meanwhile, Jordan was at mid-pack was working his way through the field to the front until he suddenly experienced a problem in turn two, sending him spinning and bringing out the second caution of the night. This little mishap would send him to the rear of the field for the restart. Jordan would spend the rest of the night trying to fight his way back up through the traffic to the front crossing the finish line in 11th.
Up front, Beard held off all comers to score the win. Cape ran second, with Parker Herring third, Danny Sanders fourth and Ty Lowe fifth.
When the field of 16 took the green flag Jordan had a nine point lead over Beard, but by the time the night was over it was Beard who had a 10 point lead over Jordan.
With only two points races left for the 2011 season it is going to take a miracle for Jordan to work his way back into the first place position, however in a season of miracles at Hartwell Speedway if there is one thing everyone has learned, it is never give up because anything can happen.
In other action, Parker Herring scored the win in the Limited Late Model feature. David McCoy crossed the line second, with Kenny Collins, Dusty Mincey and Jimmy Johnson rounding out the top five.
In the Modified Street feature, Paul Byrum streaked under the checkered flag first to pick up the victory. Tyler Brown ran second, with Jack Hill third, Chad Hoopaugh fourth and Josh Thurmond fifth.
Otis Fleeman beat Michael Segars to the finish line to grab the Stock V8 feature win. Matthew Denton ran third, with Justin Mauldin fourth and Cal Moon running fifth.
In the Stock Four Cylinder feature, Adam Smith scored the victory, beating out Chris Wilson, Mitchell Godfrey, Jeffery Lord and Nathan Bray.
Bryce Alewine topped the field in the Young Guns feature for the win. Daniel Ivester was second, with Jason Calhoun, Mitchell Ledford and Joni Church rounding out the top five.
Steven Powell picked up the victory in the Up Front feature, with Keith Hicks second, Hermon Isom third, Joel Powell, Sr. fourth and Kevin Cox fifth.
Action returns to Hartwell Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 3 with a full race program, featuring a $1,000 to win Stock Four Cylinder Summer Sizzler. Visit www.hartwell-speedway.com for more info.
