The apparent victor of Saturday night’s ‘Dog Days of Summer’ special event at New Senoia Raceway in Senoia, Georgia, Billy Bright, Jr., was stripped of the win after failing a post race teardown.  Bright’s flag to flag victory in the Newnan Bonding B Cadet feature was handed over to Blake Griffin as the Grantville driver picked up his second win of the season at the 3/8ths mile clay oval.

Racin’ Jason Williams, Tod Darda, Clifton Moran and Bo Chambers also claimed victories as one of the hottest nights of the 2011 racing season.

Hundreds of race fans braved the excessive temperatures to cheer on their favorite competitors during the track’s special July event.  Extra laps and extra money was on the line for the Newnan Bonding B Cadet division.

Union City’s Billy Bright, Jr. snagged the pole position for the 30.lap main event after winning his preliminary heat race.  Bright squeezed fellow front row starter Jeff Carter of Stockbridge towards the front stretch wall on the initial drop of the green.  This forced Carter to get out of the gas and fade back losing positions to Alabama’s Brandon Pijnenberg and Blake Griffin.

The first of nine cautions came out one lap later when Carter lost control of his race car in turn four sliding down in front of the field and collecting Watkinsville’s Buck Williams and Gay’s Jay Conner.

Cautions ruled the race for the first half of the scheduled thirty laps.  Waco’s Tim Bright, subbing for Billy Bright, Sr., was involved in a couple of wrecks as was Newnan’s Brad Betsil and Michael Cesare.  The extra money on the line had most of the drivers pushing their cars to the limit, but Billy Bright, Jr. remained in front through all of the accidents while Pijnenberg, Griffin and Villa Rica’s Mark Knight chasing him down.

On the final lap, Pijnenberg pulled up going into turn one which allowed Blake Griffin to scoot past into second place.  Mark Knight followed closely dropping him another spot before Pijnenberg regained power falling to fourth.

Bright would cross the line first followed by Griffin, Knight, Pijnenberg and 15.year.old Newnan driver Corey Payton.  The victory would only last a short while as Bright was protested in the post race tech area.  After an engine teardown, tech officials declared Bright’s car illegal and handed the win over to Griffin giving him his second feature win tis month.  All other drivers moved up one spot in the final rundown allowing Jeff Carter to round out the first five on the pay sheet.

In the Mike Wheeler’s Automotive & Transmission Late Model feature, Racin’ Jason Williams of Locust Grove won for the seventh time this season.  Williams chipped away at Alabama’s Lavon Sparks points lead for the fourth straight week.  Sparks had to settle for second and now leads Williams by only eleven points going into this Saturday night’s racing action.

Former track champion Mike Head of Ellenwood came home third behind Williams and Sparks.  It was announced this past Tuesday that Head would be part of the 2011 Georgia Auto Racing Hall of Fame inductees.  Head will be honored with four other legendary racing heroes in October at the hall of fame in Dawsonville, Georgia.

Tod Darda led every single lap of the 25.lap main event for the Crown Security Crate Late Models.  Darda never looked back after shooting to the lead early over Fayetteville’s Richie Williams and Jenkinsburg’s Trey White.  Roger Cassell ran his best race of the season winning a late race battle for fourth over Grantville’s Doug Ludwig.

Carrollton’s Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran used his luck of the draw front row starting position to leave his closest competitors behind in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock feature.  Moran picked up his tenth win of the season ahead of Newnan’s Rusty ‘Rocketman’ Johnson and Williamson’s Houston ‘Hoot Daddy’ Hachett.  Brooks Kerry Carden and the ‘Grantville Grenade’ Austin Horton rounded out the first five.

Current Mini Stock points leader Dorough Bright dropped out of the race at the halfway point leaving the door wide open for Griffin’s Bo Chambers to capture his first victory of the season.  Chambers took over the lead on lap 10 and then held off all challenges from Sharpsburg’s Lonnie Patterson and Barnesville’s Gary Parker.

On the strength of his third place finish, Gary Parker has pulled within twelve points of Whitesburg’s Dorough Bright in the chase for the season points title in the four cylinder stock car division.  Bright ended up eighth in the final rundown.

New Senoia Racewa will return to action on Saturday, July 30, featuring racing in the Mike Wheeler’s Automotive & Transmission Late Models, Crown Security Crate Late Models, Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks.

The night will also include the Waterless Boat Races.  This wild and crazy event is a ‘must see’ as drivers will tow boats around the clay oval with various types of junk cars.  No trailers are allowed during this crash up competition.  The boats are dragged by chains or rope.  The winner is determined by who keeps their boat attached as the object is to knock your opponent’s boats from their tow vehicle.  The destruction and nayhem created is similar to a moving demolition derby.
