Mid-Season Titles Handed Out At New Senoia Raceway

After a week off due to the July 9 rained out event, New Senoia Raceway in Senoia, Georgia crowned its mid-season champions on Saturday night.  Lavon Sparks nabbed the honor in the Mike Wheeler’s Automotive & Transmission Late Model division while Jeff Carter topped the points chart at the halfway mark for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets.  Dorough Bright held off Gary Parker for the title in the Mini Stocks and Clifton Moran finished off a near perfect first half with the mid-season championship for the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock class.

Moran’s title was locked up when he merely started the feature race Saturday.  The Carrollton driver had won nine main events entering this past weekend’s event.  Bu, he would be starting deep in the field after a poor qualifying effort during heat race action.

Up front the battle would ensue on the drop of the green between Whitesburg’s Blant Duke and Newnan’s Richie Stephens.  Duke pounced on a third opportunity at starting the race to shoot out to the lead.  Stephens fought his way back as Williamson’s Houston ‘Hoot Daddy’ Hatchett battled for third with ‘Rocketman’ Rusty Johnson of Newnan.

On the second lap, Johnson and Hatchett touched going down the backstretch.  The incidental contact upset the set-up in both cars forcing each driver to adjust at full speed heading into the third turn.  The result was Hatchett and Johnson sliding high in the fourth turn which allowed Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran to move on past and steal away third.

Moran joined the race for first creating an exciting three way tussle for the lead.  At times it looked as though Moran and Stephens were going to try and make it three wide with Duke fighting off the attempts each time.

The race’s first caution came out for Mike Anthony after he cut a tire and slowed down the backstretch.  Just as the caution was coming out for Anthony, Moran lost control of his #007 Chevrolet in turn four.  The chain reaction caused Johnson to spin to avoid contact and then Hatchett slammed into the melee ending his night with a busted radiator.  Moran would also have to visit the pit area to change a right rear tire.

Stephens jumped at the chance to get an outside run on Duke for the restart.  He hung on the outside of Duke as the two raced side by side through turn three.  Stephens momentum gave him the power to scoot past and take over the lead on lap 7 and left Duke to race with Johnson for the number two spot.

As Stephens pulled away, Duke and Johnson fought for track position making slight contact in every corner.  The classic New Senoia Raceway dual ended on lap 11 when the two drivers tangled and crashed coming out of the second turn.  Duke and Johnson exchanged words outside of their race cars as they waited for the track wreckers to pull apart their mangled machines.

When the race resumed, Stephens was clearly stronger than Clifton Moran who had charged his way back up through the field.  Stephens would win the race over Moran with Duke also charging back up from the rear of the field on the restart to finish in third.  Mike Jenkins and Kerry Carden rounded out the first five in the field of fifteen.

After the race was completed, Moran protested the engine of Stephens may be illegal.  The track rules allow competitors to place cash money on the line and track tech officials will oversee the inspection of questioned items.

“Get me my money,” shouted Richie Stephens prior to his victory lane interview trackside.  “I will take it and show them anything they want.”

The protest ended several hours after the checkered flag had fallen, but Stephens was correct according to the rulebook and awarded the win and the extra money posted for the protest.

It was a three way battle, as it has been all season, in the Mike Wheeler’s Automotive & Transmission Late Model division.  Phenix City’s Lavon Sparks, Locust Grove’s “Racin’” Jason Williams and Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher came into the racing action separated by only eighteen points.  Williams snared the pole position in late afternoon qualifying.  Fulcher would start outside of him with Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris starting third and Sparks outside of him in the second row.

On the start of the race, Williams and Fulcher stayed side by side at over 100 miles per hour through the first two turns.  Fulcher then slid high in the fourth turn, allowing Sparks to sneak past and take over the second place spot behind Williams.  The three drivers would chase each other for the remainder of the race with Morris joining the fray for the final seven circuits.

The exciting race saw all four drivers within inches of each other ended with Williams claiming his sixth win of the season.  Sparks would have to settle for second and the mid-season title while Fulcher came home third.  Morris was fourth followed by Scott Duffey.

“I knew he was back there,” said Williams looking at his left rear quarter panel.  “He may have been a little faster than us tonight, but we were able to hold him off and chip away at the points lead.”

The Bright Racing Team finished one and two in the Newnan Bonding B Cadet main event.  The elder Bright has won three times this season, but would have to settle for second as Billy Bright, Jr. notched his first win of the year ahead of his daddy, ‘The Cat in the Hat’, Billy Bright, Sr.  Point’s leader and mid-season champion, Jeff Carter of Stockbridge, finished in third ahead of Grantville’s Blake Griffin and Lithia Springs’ TJ Joiner.

The Newnan Bonding B Cadets will compete this Saturday, July 23rd in a special extended lap feature with extra money on the line.  The “Dog Days of Summer 30” is expected to be a dog fight as the Union City racing duo Billy Sr. and Billy Jr. will look to knock Jeff Carter from his lofty position on top of the points.

In the Mini Stock feature, LaGrange’s Dusty Jones picked up his sixth win of the season after working past points leader and mid-season champion Dorough Bright at the half way point of the race.  Barnesville’s Gary Parker ended up third and just shy of the mid-season points lead while Griffin’s Bo Chambers was fourth and Senoia’s Robbie Scardon fifth.

Other race action saw Tod Darda of LaGrange lead wire to wire over Salem, Alabama’s Dana Eiland to win the Crown Security Crate Late Model feature.  The win was Darda’s fourth of the season.

This Saturday night, July 23, New Senoia Raceway hosts the “Dog Days of Summer 30” for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets.  The special feature with extra money on the line will headline an event that will also include racing in the Mike Wheeler’s Automotive & Transmission Late Models, Crown Security Crate Late Models, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks.  The Bombers will also be on the racing card for this Saturday night as they continue to compete on an every other Saturday night basis through the end of the season in September.
