After having to wait an extra week due to Mother Nature, the drivers and fans were out in full force to see a big night of racing which quickly turned out to be super wild at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, GA on Saturday night.
The Georgia Fair Tax Outlaw Late Models were back for a 50 lap main event. North Georgia driver Matthew Wragg started on the pole with South Georgia’s driver David Hodges, Jr. alongside. The green flew and fierce side by side battles began earlier on for positions third through sixth with Stuart Dutton, Steve Renner, Billy Chancy and Jimmy Motes all battling hard. The first of several cautions flew as rookie driver Lane Watson went for a quick spin in turn four.
With the green flag back out, the side by side battle for the top spot began with Wragg and Hodges gunning for the lead. Just as Hodges set sail after a multi lap battle with Wragg, the caution flew once again as the field made it to half way due to a spin in turn four involving Stewart Smith, Luke Yoder, Lane Watson and Steve Barker.
When the green flew again on lap twenty-five, it was quickly replaced with the caution in turn one as drivers Steve Renner and Kyle McCallum made slight contact. Both were sent spinning, but both cars were able to continue. The green flew once more, and Hodges was again able to put some distance between himself and Wragg. The caution flew again, after Jimmy Motes spun ater running off the racing surface in turn two, collecting Luke Yoder as he came back on the track.
After extensive track clean-up the field resumed racing with nine laps remaining. The yellow flag flew again after Wragg made contact with the leader, sending both Hodges and Wragg around, setting up a two lap battle for the finish.
With Wragg being sent to the back for causing the caution, the final restart consisted of Hodges and Dutton side by side, with Hodges picking up his first win of 2012. Dutton finished second, with Jimmy Motes, Billy Chancy and Matthew Wragg rounding out the top five.
In other action, John Burke and Jimmy Nasworthy made up the front row for the Enduro feature, and battled side by side for a majority of the twenty lap event. Finally, Nasworthy was able to take advantage of a wiggle by Burkes in turn two. As the checkered flag fell it was Nasworthy scoring his first win of 2012 with Burke finishing second followed by John Burke, Michael Hutto, Wesley Burke and Jason Lang in fifth.
Joseph Pilato and Zachary Ayers started on the front row for the 15 lap the Pro Challenge Series feature. Alabama’s Pilato cruised to the checkered flag, with Georgia’s Ayers crossing the line in second. Joe Wilder finished in third.
In the Mini-Stock feature, John Tullis and Anthony Bustamante started side by side. The two teammates were able to take advantage of the upfront start able to set sail into the Georgia night with a commanding lead. As the laps wound down, it was Tullis picking up the victory, with Bustamante crossing the line in second. Jake Roberts, Todd Holder, and James Pennington rounded out the top five.
In Bandolero action, youngsters Zack Leonhardi and Connor Younginer battled side by side until Leonhardi was able to get a run off turn two and managed to pull away to capture his second win of 2012. Following Leonhardi was Younginer in second, Jordan McCallum in third, with Lee Hodges and Jacob Sumner rounding out the top five.
Alex Coffey scored the win in the Legends feature. William Plemmons came home second.
Jeff Smith topped a deep field in the Go Cart feature. Rebecca Turner finished second, with Steven Crowley in third, Brian Hardman in fourth, and Gary Turner in fifth.
