Mother Nature looked like she was going to be the big winner Saturday night before the races got underway, as clouds were in full force around the East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL.

But the threat of rain could not slow down Doug Watson, as he sped around the East Bay clay to score the victory in the Late Model feature.

Shan Smith, filling in for Al Larson, started on the pole, with Josh Peacock alongside.  On the drop of the green flag, Peacock led the field into one, but several cars tangled in turn two taking them out of contention.

That put Peacock and Doug Watson on the front row as the race got back underway. Again Peacock got a great start with Watson behind him, but cars once again tangled, blocking the first turn and bringing out the red flag.

On the second restart, Peacock again led the way with Watson right behind him. For six laps, Watson continued to knock on the door and finally made the pass out of turn four past Peacock to take the lead.

On lap eight, Travis Varnadore made his move, passing Peacock to take over the second spot while Watson began to pull out to a commanding. Caution came out on lap ten when Bobby Clark spun in turn four.  That brought the field right back to Watson.

On the restart, Watson showed the way into turn one and began to pull away from the field, but on lap sixteen, Kyle Mussleman spun bringing out the caution once more. When the final green waved, Watson pulled away again, stretching his lead out over Varnadore and the rest of the field.

Watson took the checkered flag first, with Varnadore, Peacock, Roger Crouse and Hayden Campbell rounding out the top five.

In other action, the Outlaw Fours started out the night with their feature.

The first feature of the night went to the Outlaw Fours. On the front row for the feature were Billy Howard and Stephen Hohlbaugh. When the green flag waved, it was Howard and Hohlbaugh side by side into turn one. But it didn’t last long, as Brandon Yates bringing out the first caution on the opening lap. Hohlbaugh led the field under the restart with Howard right on his back bumper. Meanwhile, Shirlene Hammond stalked the lead duo, and on lap six, Hammond swept into the lead.

Howard took over the second spot two laps later, and worked to chase down the leader. But as Hammond tried to make her way around a lapped car in turn four she spun the car, handing the lead to Howard. Hohlbaugh moved into second with Jesse Brown in third.

Following the Late Model feature was the East Bay Sprints.

Heat winners Tony Agin and Billy Boyd, Jr. started the feature from the front row.  It took several restarts for the field to get under way, but on the third time, it was Boyd, Jr. leading Agin and the rest of the field into turn one.

The first caution came out on lap five as Bob Auld came to rest in turn four backing his car into the wall. On the restart, Boyd again led the way. Agin continued to shadow Boyd, but was unable to make the pass.

On lap six, Kurt Taylor took a wild ride, as his car went airborne after hitting the front stretch wall, bringing out the red flag.  Taylor escaped injury, but his car was totaled.

The caution would fly once more in the final laps.  As the cars circled the track under caution, Boyd’s engine developed a miss, putting his win in jeopardy.

But Boyd was able to hold onto the win, with Agin second, Stephen Darvalics third, Jimmy Ballew fourth, and Kerry Gilbert in fifth.

The last feature of the night went to the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. On the start of the race it was Raymond Vann and Richard Humfeld on the front row, with Vann moving out front early.  Bubba Puyear spun in turn four on the third lap to bring out the first caution.

On the restart, Vann, Humfeld and John Moore all started to pull away. But caution came out for debris on the track. On the restart, it started to mist rain with just five laps to go. With Mother Nature making her presence known, the race ended early with Vann picking up the win. Moore finished second with Humfeld, Donn R. Quinn, and Kayla Jones rounding out the top five.
