Saturday night saw the first racing action in the regular season for fans and racers at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, GA.

The popular Outlaw Late Models were part of that kick-off, with Billy Chancy beating out Steve Barker for the victory.

Barker started on the pole after setting fast time in qualifying, with Ooltewah, TN racer Chuck Cooper on the outside.  On the drop of the green, the two top starters put on a great side-by-side race.  Cooper was finally able to move away, and had built up a strong lead until lap 37, when he had to come to pit road for a loose hood.

Meanwhile, Chancy moved into the top spot, and would hold off Barker to score the victory.  Kyle McCallum finished third, with Cooper in fourth, and Stewart Smith rounding out the top five.

In other action, Jefferson, GA’s Todd Holder made the long trip south payoff by picking up the win in the Mini-Stock feature.

Cordele’s Banks Perdue would start the 20 lap event on the pole, with Holder alongside.  Shannon Faircloth would move to the front to do battle with the leaders in the early laps.  Faircloth would make contact with Holder, bringing out the caution.  Holder would go on to record the win, with Perry, GA’s James Pennington in second.  Faircloth finished third, with Perdue in fourth and Michael Karp in fifth.

Cody Hale scored the win in the Enduro feature.  Michael Hutto and Wesley Burke started up front.  Hale would charge from the back after an incident sent him off the track in turn three, moving to the front, where he took control of the event and held it to the end.  Burke finished second, followed by Hutto, Jason Lang, and Brian Taylor.

Tallahassee, FL racer Joey Padgett came away with the victory in the 20-lap Legends feature.  Padgett led the field to the green, with Alex Coffey alongside.  The duo would race side-by-side for several laps, and then gave chase to each other over the course of the race.  Padgett would come away with the victory, with Coffey in second.  Rile Thornton finished third, followed by Angus Hunt in fourth, and Amber Fleeman in fifth.

Zack Leonhardi would take the early lead and drive away to score the Bandoleros feature win.  Connor Younginer finished second, with Jordan McCallum third, Abby Marion fourth, and Mark Younginer fifth.

Action returns to Watermelon Capital Speedway on April 7, with action in the Bandoleros, Legends, Mini Stock, Pure Stock, Enduro, Super Street and Go Carts divisions. For more information, visit watermeloncapitalspeedway.com.
