UPDATE: Rain Postpones Daytona 500 To Monday Night

After trying valiantly against the elements, NASCAR officials announced shortly after 5 pm Sunday afternoon that the 54th annual Daytona 500 will be postponed to the next day.

Plans are now to run the event at 7 pm  Monday evening.  It marks the first time that the event has not been run on its scheduled date.

Rain has continued to fall in Daytona, but is expected to taper off late in the afternoon.  The original plan called for the event to be run beginning at noon today (Monday), but officials made the decision to move the time back with more favorable weather expected in the evening.

Four times previously, it has been cut short by rain, that occurring in 1965 (winner, Fred Lorenzen), 1966 (Richard Petty), 2003 (Michael Waltrip), and 2009 (Matt Kenseth).

Rain has twice delayed the start of the 500.  In 1963, the first 10 laps of the event were run under yellow due to rain.  A similar situation saw the first 16 laps run under yellow in 1979.
