Darrell Lanigan, of Union, KY, won the World of Outlaws Late Model Series race Saturday night at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Georgia. He took home $20,700, which is the biggest prize in dirt racing in the state in 2012.

Track owner and promoter Redd Griffen advertised the show as the ‘Winter Freeze’ and the weatherman delivered temperatures in the low thirties and a full day of strong westerly winds to the track and to the near-full house fans.

Ray Cook, of Brasstown, NC, started outside on the front row, and led the first 12 laps before Lanigan took control.  Cook got past Lanigan in traffic on lap 45, but Lanigan was soon back in front, and won by 2.1 seconds. Cook finished second, equalling his best World of Outlaws finish, winning $10,500.

The race had six cautions in the first 28 laps, and the double-file restarts gave many drivers passing opportunities.  Rick Eckert, the 2011 WoO season champion, was able to advance from 12th to third place, and rookie Jared Hawkins moved from 15th to seventh.

Shane Clanton, of Fayetteville, GA, won his heat race Friday, and started from the pole in the 60-lap feature. He fell slowly back to finish fifth, earning $4,550. He was driving a Capital Race Car chassis, which he and former racer Marshall Green are developing and building. Following Friday’s heat, he felt he needed more speed, but “We just went the wrong way. I needed to go back to the way I was last night.”

Clint Smith, of Senoia, GA, failed to qualify via his heat race or B-main, and started 25th in the 29-car field using a WoO provisional. He was unable to pass many cars, and finished 19th as cars fell out in front of him.

Casey Roberts, from Toccoa, GA, finished in 10th place on the lead lap, after starting 11th.

Hunter Peacock, from Macon, GA, started 19th and finished 16th.
