The biggest weekend in asphalt short tracing racing of the year kicks off today, as drivers from all over the country converge at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida for the 52nd running of the Snowball Derby.
Senoia, Georgia’s Bubba Pollard leads a pack of perennial favorites into the race weekend. Pollard can boast wins all over the East coast, as well as in Canada for 2019, and will be looking to put a cap on his season with his first career Tom Dawson trophy as a Snowball Derby winner – an honor that has eluded him in 11 previous starts.
Another Georgia driver – Jasper’s Chandler Smith – will also be looking for redemption when the green flag falls on Sunday’s 300 Super Late Model feature. Smith appeared to be on his way to the victory in the All American 400 at Tennessee’s Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville when a run-in with a lap car in the final laps let the win slip away.
Smith will be piloting a proven winning mount, as he will drive the No. 51 Toyota for Kyle Busch Motorsports – a team that can boast three previous Snowball victories, two with owner Kyle Busch and one with Erik Jones.
Lawrenceville, Georgia’s Casey Roderick will be looking for his first career Snowball Derby win. Roderick will be piloting a KBM Motorsports Toyota owned by veteran driver Donnie Wilson. Other Peach State drivers set to attempt to make the field of Sunday’s feature include Kyle Plott and Corey Heim, who both hail from Marietta, Georgia.
NASCAR Cup Series driver Corey LaJoie will also be looking to contend for the win, along with legendary short track ace Rich Bickle, a five-time Snowball winner, former World Crown 300 winners Jeff Choquette and Preston Peltier, former NASCAR ace David Gilliland and Late Model Stock Car standout Josh Berry.
Other entries include Stephen Nasse, Matt Craig, Johnny VanDoorn, Giovanni Bromante, Ty Majeski, two-time Snowball winner Augie Grill and veteran Florida driver David Rogers.
Almost as much attention centers on Saturday’s Pro Late Model Snowflake 100 feature.

On Thursday, the Super Late Models and Pro Late Models get their first cracks on the track with practice, while the Pro Truck, Sportsman and Pure Stocks run their features.
Friday will see more practice for qualifying for the Super Late Models, with feature action for the Modifieds.
The Pro Late Models will take center stage on Saturday, with qualifying and the running of the Snowflake 100. The late chance race for the Super Late Models and the Outlaw Stock feature will also be on tap.
The race weekend culminates with the 52nd annual Snowball Derby for the Super Late Models on Sunday.
