Racing returned to North Carolina’s Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday night, as Gage Painter and Thomas Beane both made trips to victory lane in Late Model Stock Car action at the famed 3/8-mile asphalt raceway.
In the first of two 40 lap LMSC features, Painter set fast time in qualifying, and would lead the field to the green flag from the pole with Pat Rachels on the outside of the front row.
Painter moved to the early lead as Rachels struggled on the start. The action began early when Beane spun after racing three wide with Charlie Watson and Nolan Pope, drawing a caution.
On the restart, Painter moved back to the lead while Beane began working his way back through the field. Over the closing laps, Chris Hudspeth reeled in the leader, and began battling with Painter for the top spot.
The duo raced side-by-side for several laps, which allowed Travis Swaim to become a part of the battle for the win. The final corner of the last lap would see Hudspeth looking under Painter and Swaim looking under Hudspeth. Painter would hang on for the win, with Hudspeth nosing ahead of Swaim for second. Kevin Leicht finished in fourth, with Rachels in fifth.
In the second feature, the invert from the first race put Pope and and Beane on the front row, with Beane moving to the early lead. Behind him, contact between Pope and Connor Mosack sent both into the outside wall, with Swaim coming away with damage as well.
Beane would move back to the point on the restart, with Vince Midas moving to second. Midas would close on Beane on lap 15, and began pressuring the leader. Midas would move to the lead on lap 24, but saw Beane move back around him with a crossover move. Two laps later, contact between the leaders sent both of them spinning, bringing out the caution and sending both to the rear for the restart.
Kevin Leicht moved to the lead, with Painter giving chase. The two swapped the top spot, and contact between them triggered a multi-car crash on lap 28. Among those sidelined was Midas and Swaim, while several others sustained damage.
On the restart, Ryan Vargas took the lead with Charlie Watson in second. Watson’s car would begin trailing smoke, prompting a black flag from race officials. As Watson headed for pit road, the caution came out again due to several drivers reporting oil on the track. That led to a short red flag to allow for track cleanup.
Back under green, Vargas moved back to the lead, but Painter charged to the point with a three-wide pass. Matt Leicht put pressure on Painter over the closing laps.
On the final lap, the lead duo made contact off of turn four, sending Painter spinning.
Leicht would drive thru the smoke and appear to take the checkered flag and the win. However, track officials would look at a replay of the incident and Leicht would be penalized to the last car on the lead lap. That moved Thomas Beane to victory lane after an earlier spin earlier in the race.
Hudspeth, Rachels, Painter and Vargas rounded out the top five.
In other action, Josh Kossek scored the victory in the Limited Late Model feature, with Cody DeMarmels in second, Todd Midas in third, Josh Stark in fourth and Akinori Ogata in fifth.
Drew Cox was the winner in the Street Stocks feature. Jonathon Smith came home in second, with Jesse Clark in third, Kevin Eby in fourth and Derek Fowler in fifth.
Allen Huffman took top honors in the Super Trucks feature, with Charlie Neill, Joey Shuryan, Travis Baity and Dennis Trivette rounding out the top five.
Justin Austin was the winner in the Renegades feature. Brian Larkin followed in second, with Robbie Hollifield in third, Rodney Elkins in fourth and Zach Mullins in fifth.
