Turner Closes Toccoa Season With Thunder Series Win

For many, the Labor Day holiday weekend marks the end of summer. For Georgia’s Toccoa Raceway, it marked the end of the 2018 season.

And what better way to close out the season than with a pair of hometown heroes battling it out for the feature win for the visiting Alpha Art 602 Thunder Series at the historic 5/16 mile clay speedway.

Toccoa, Georgia native Crandall Turner led wire-to-wire to score the win and the $1,300 payday. The win also earned Turner the track’s “King of the Highbanks” title.

Fellow Toccoa driver Nick Sellers came home in second. South Carolina speedster Dale Timms followed in third, with Dustin Morris in fourth and Rusty House in fifth.

Brandon Stroud, Rod Roberts, Josh Thurmond, former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield and Drew Benfield rounded out the top ten.

In other action, Colbert, Georgia’s Kenny Collins made his first start in a Limited Late Model at Toccoa in a long time. He proved he can still get it done, as he powered around David McCoy on the opening lap. Collins went on to lead every laps en route to the victory. McCoy finished in second, securing the “King of the Highbanks” title. Clayton Turner came home in third.

In the FASTRAK Pro Late Model, feature, Blake Craft, took the lead on the opening lap and drove away to the victory. David McCoy finished second, wrapping up his second Highbanks title of the night in the process. Dustin Morris finished third.

Sterling Helm scored the win in the Modified Street feature, scoring the Highbanks title as well. Second place finisher Chris Nickerson failed post-race tech inspection and was disqualified. That moved Daniel Doster to second, with Bryce Alewine in third.

Kevin Kelly took the top honors in the Stock 4 feature, winning the Hihbanks title as well. Jamie Massey and J.J. Garrett rounded out the top three.

Jack Hill took the top spot in the Stock 8 feature over Nickoli Holcomb, while Bradlee Jones finished in third. Toccoa’s Hayden Collett finished in tenth, which was enough to take home the Highbanks crown.

In Toccoa Pro Truck feature, Terry Calhoun finally outran a string of bad luck that had plagued him, as he beat out Matthew Furgerson for the victory. Furgerson won the war, however, as he scored the Highbanks title for the division. Sterling Helm finished in third.

BJ Davis who was flagged the winner in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Front Wheel Drive feature, but he was found to be light at the scales and was disqualified. That moved Scott Parker to victory lane, with Travis Barbare in second and Scott Arrowood in third. Michael Elrod finished in fourth, earning the division’s Highbanks title.

Jacob Kelly was the winner in the Kettle Construction Young Guns feature, followed by Highbanks champion Caylan Kettle in second and Tucker Anderson in third.
