Matthew Furgerson started last in Saturday night’s Pro Truck division feature at Georgia’s Toccoa Raceway.
When the checkered flag fell, it was the Maysville, Georgia native crossing the finish line first in a furious finish to take the feature victory at the historic 5/16 clay speedway.
Furgerson was chasing down leader Terry Calhoun over the closing laps. He finally cleared Calhoun to take the lead on the final lap. Calhoun countered by trying to take a high line around Furgerson to retake the lead off turn four. But Calhoun’s truck tagged the wall, sending him sliding and allowing Ferguson to get away for the win.
Calhoun slid sideways across the finish line to take second, while Spud Nicholson came home in third.
In other action, David McCoy bested the field in the Midsouth Cage Equipment Limited Late Models, taking home a $1,500 winner’s payday. Daniel Wilson finished in second, with Mason Tucker claiming third.
In the FASTRAK Pro Late Model feature, Blake Craft led flag-to-flag to take the victory. David McCoy took second place, with Nick Schlager finishing third.
After a start that saw the pole sitter get sideways and, as a result, take out several good cars on the opening lap of the Safety Plus 602 Sportsman division race, it was hometown driver Crandall Turner who got the win. Turner passed polesitter Dustin Morris on the opening lap, and led wire-to-wire for the win. Josh Thurmond ran second with Nick Sellers in third.
Another hometown driver went to victory lane in the Modified Street division, as Chad Sellers claimed his first win of the season. Smokey Roberts finished second, followed by Tim Bohannan in third.
There was a scary moment in the Stock 4 Cylinder feature, as an apparent loose fuel line dumped gas on the headers of David Walker’s engine. His car erupted in flames both outside the car and in the cockpit. The fire was quickly extinguished by the track safety crew and the on-board safety equipment in Walker’s car, which suffered damage from the flames. Fortunately, Walker escaped injury.
Meanwhile, J.J. Garrett scored the feature win, with Kevin Kelly in second and Harley Holden in third.
Evan Brown was the winner in the Stock V8 feature. Hayden Collett finished in second, with Ben Carswell in third.
Ricky Holcomb scored the victory in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Front Wheel Drive feature, followed by Justin Reed in second and Alex Woodard in third.
In the Kettle Construction Company Young Guns feature, Preston Kelly took top honors, with Caylan Kettle second with Jacob Rhome third.
Toccoa Raceway returns to action on Thursday, July 19, as the speedway plays host to the Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Summer Shootout. For more information, visit ToccoaRaceway.com.
