Billy Rushton powered to the lead on the drop of the green flag in Saturday night’s Alpha Art Company Thunder Series feature at Georgia’s Winder-Barrow Speedway.
From there, the Greenwood, South Carolina racer went on to score the win at the ¼ mile clay raceway.
Starting on the outside of the front row, Rushton raced side-by-side with pole sitter Lee Gray, taking the lead as the field drove into turn three for the first time. Gray settled into second, with former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield in third.
Over the next several laps, Rushton would come under fire from Gray, but Rushton was able to hold him at bay. As the race wound on, Rushton was able to build a comfortable lead over the field.
That advantage evaporated when the first caution came out for an incident on the backstretch. It started as Rod Roberts, Michael Barnett and Justin Sims raced down the backstretch. As the trio battled through lap traffic, they found themselves racing three wide. It all boiled over when Barnett made contact with Sims, sending Barnett spinning into the outside wall.
On the restart, Rushton again fired off into the lead, with Gray in pursuit. Behind them, Mayfield settled into third, followed by Roberts and Sims. The action was broken up again a few laps later by the second caution of the night. The next restart was nullified by a spin in turn three, bringing out the caution flag for the third time.
Back under green, Rushton again took the point, but would see his competitors close on him again when a spin in turn four by Mayfield resulted in the fourth and final caution of the race.
When the race got back underway, Rushton again got a strong jump to take the lead. From there, he went on to record the victory.
Gray finished in second, with Roberts in third, Sims in fourth and Keith Baker in fifth.
In other action, Scott Frady held off Chad Puckett to score the victory in the Limited Late Model feature. John Anderson finished in third, with Dustin Cason in fourth and Ken Lampp in fifth.
Mark Chancey was the winner in the Stock V8 feature. Jeff Casper came home in second, followed by Trip Sexton in third and Jr. Carter in fourth.
Elliott Brayboy took the win in the Stock 4A feature, with Allen Cantrell in second, Scott Cox in third and David Nash in fourth.
Cody Albright won the Stock 4B feature. Brandon Cox, Kyle Walker, Franklin Sargent and William Earnest rounded out the top five.
Jordan Poole scored the victory in the Modified Street feature.
