Shanon Buckingham opened up the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Series 2017 season Saturday with a victory in the Super Late Model Cabin 40 at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Georgia.

The win was worth a $3,500 payday for the Morristown, Tennessee driver, as he held off a stout 22 car field for the win in the ninth annual running of the event.

Billy Ogle, Jr. would take the lead on the initial start, but it would get called back for a three-car tangle in turn four before everyone completed a lap. The second attempted start would see Buckingham take the lead, with Ogle, Jr., Justin Litchford, John Ownbey, and David Brannon giving chase.

Three more cautions would slow the action before racing finally settled down, with Ogle, Jr. starting to pressure Buckingham for the lead on lap 15. Ogle, Jr. would take the lead briefly on lap 17, but a caution for the slowed machine of Dawsonville, Georgia’s Donald McIntosh’s would negate that pass.

Back under green, Ogle, Jr. continued to pressure Buckingham for the lead and would pull alongside of the leader on lap 28, but Buckingham would maintain the advantage, with Litchford closing on the front two in the meantime.

One final caution would slow the action on lap 35, giving Ogle, Jr. one more shot at the lead. But Buckingham would prove too tough at the finish and scored the win.

Ogle, Jr. came home in second, with Litchford finishing third, Ownbey in fourth and Brannon in fifth.

Dale McDowell, Derek Ellis, Austin Horton, Ray Cook, and Riley Hickman rounded out the top ten.

The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Series will return to action on Friday, April 7 at Blue Ridge Motorsports Park in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Action continues on Saturday, April 8 at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee.
