Bubba Pollard can usually be found fighting among the best asphalt short track racers in the country for some of the biggest wins in short track racing.
On Saturday night, he proved he can hold his own with some of the best dirt track racers as well, as the Senoia, Georgia native scored a hometown victory with a flag-to-flag run in the Crate Late Model division at Senoia Raceway.
Pollard, the grandson of Senoia Raceway track builder Hence Pollard, jumped to the early lead before running several laps side-by-side with Mike Bruner. Bruner challenged Pollard several times on the inside, but each time Pollard would slam the door shut. Pollard held off Bruner for his first dirt win of the season while defending Crate Late Model points champion Bobby Mills finished third. Marty Lunsford finished in fourth, with Cody Richards in fifth.
In other action, Shane Clanton set a new Super Late Model track record during preliminary qualifying, eclipsing the fastest lap by Chris Madden just three weeks earlier. He used his pole position to shoot out the lead over Mason Massey and Joe Armistead, Jr. Massey and Armistead touched coming off turn two while chasing Clanton with the result a cut tire and spin by Massey.
Austin Horton moved past Armistead during the early race, but could not catch Clanton who went wire-to-wire to score the victory. Horton would end up in second ahead of Armistead in third, Jason Williams in fourth and Ricky Williams in fifth.
Oliver Gentry shot out to an early lead in the Limited Late Model feature. Gentry looked to be on his way to the winner’s circle before hitting a turn the wrong way and losing power and handling. The turn of events allowed for defending division points champion Joey Armistead to snag the lead. It was a position he would not relinquish. Clint “Cat Daddy” Smith finished second, with Gentry third, Jason Williams fourth and Glenn Morris fifth.
Blant Duke was the third flag-to-flag winner on the night as he scored his third B Cadet feature win of the season. Brandon Bright, Clyde Alexander, Dakota Weeks and Parrish Duncan rounded out the top five.
A last lap pass launched Randy Cornwell to a third straight victory in the Hobby Stock feature. H.B. Duke led all but the final lap of the race as Cornwell jumped under him in turn three and then won a drag race to the finish line. Curtis Turner finished in third, with Chris Steele in fourth and Gary Brand in fifth.
James Swanger took the win in the Bomber feature. Tim Harmon finished second, with Blake Harmon in third, Wilson Boozer in fourth and Winford Minix in fifth.
J.J. Garrett scored the feature race for the Kajun Mini Stock Association, with Mike Rominger in second, Michael Courtney in third, Jamie Rowan in fourth and Jason Gilliam in fifth.
Special Olympics Georgia presents the racing action at Senoia Raceway on Saturday, April 23, featuring the return of the Old Man’s Garage Spring Nationals. The Limited Late Models, Crate Late Models, B Cadets, Hobby Stock and Bombers will also be in action.
