Josh Berry moved to the front of the field, then held off a late charge by Dexter Canipe to score the Bojangles Late Model feature victory Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway in Newton, NC.
Canipe set fast time in qualifying to take the pole for the feature, with Berry starting on the outside of the front row. Matt Piercy and Casey Pierce made up row two.
On the drop of the green flag, Canipe jumped to the lead and would hold the spot for the first few laps as the field jockeyed for position behind him. Berry would finally create a small opening and drive in it to take the point with Canipe and Piercy close in tow.
As the laps began to count down, Piercy would get by Canipe for second and began to reel in Berry. However, the lead would prove to be insurmountable as Berry would go on to grab his first victory of the 2016 season.
Piercy finished in second, with Canipe in third, Christian Eckes in fourth and Ryan Millington in fifth.
In other action, Jeremy Pelfrey jumped to the early lead of the Limited Late Model feature. Behind him, Monty Cox, Evan Duggins, Evan Swilling and Charlie Watson in battled for second. Despite a late race caution Pelfrey would drive on for the win. Swilling finished in second, with Watson in third, Duggins in fourth and Mitch Walker in fifth.
Bill Webb led the Catawba Realty & Insurance Co. Classic Sportsman Racing Series field to green, with Eddie Gilbert grabbing the early lead. Gilbert faced constant pressure from Webb, but in the end, Gilbert would take the victory. Webb finished a close second, with Dennis Hinkle in third, Bill Powell in fourth and Tom Fenn in fifth.
Kevin Townsend jumped to the early lead of the Street Stocks feature, while Cody DeMarmels battled with Kevin Eby for second. Townsend would hold on for win number two of the early season, as DeMarmels taking second over Eby. Eric Evans and Marshall Sutton rounded out the top five.
Robert Trivette jumped to the early lead in the 4 Cylinder feature, but would see his race go away when mechanical problems sent him to the pits. That moved Charlie Neill to the lead, and he would go on to score the win. Curtis Pardue finished in second, with Rob Lewis in third, Rusty Fann in fourth and Rodney Trivette in fifth.
Action continues at Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 19, with action form the Bojangles Late Models, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, 4-Cylinders and Renegades.
