The second race of the 2016 season at Greenville-Pickens Speedway Saturday saw a first-time winner make her way to victory lane, as Tasha Kummer scored the Limited Late Model feature win at the historic Easley, SC raceway.
Colby Howard qualified fastest for the second straight week for the feature, with Kummer starting her No. 35 alongside. Luke Sorrow started third, with his sister-in-law, Taylor Sorrow in fourth.
Howard took the lead at the outset but Kummer, drove by him early in the race as he fell all the way back to seventh in the first seven laps.
The race stayed under green until lap 22 when Brian Burns got spun between turns one and two. By this time, Howard had moved back up to ride in the fifth spot behind Luke Sorrow. Back under green, Kummer pulled out to a full second advantage over the next 50 laps.
Root stayed in second but was being hounded by Taylor Sorrow until Taylor took the position on lap 54. Luke Sorrow also slipped by Root into third and then passed his sister-in-law with just nine laps left to take over the runner up spot and set sail after leader Kummer. It didn’t appear he had the car to close the gap, but on lap 71 everything changed when Burns spun into the wall hard, bringing out another caution.
This set up a five-lap shootout, with Luke Sorrow starting on the outside of Kummer.
It was not to be, as Kummer shot back out front on the restart and was never challenged again as she scored her first career victory. Luke Sorrow finished in second, with Taylor Sorrow in third, Andrew Cordell in fourth and Bob Root in fifth.
In other action, Dannon Esco and Travis Shelton set the pace from row one of the 4-Cylinder Front Wheel Drive feature. The race went wire-to-wire under green, as Esco took the top spot and was never really challenged, going on to pick up a solid victory. Chad Redding finished in second, with in third, Don Tavernia in fourth and Hunter Evans in fifth.
Billy Brown and Anthony Cordell made up the front row in the Renegade feature. Brown took the early lead and sped off, building several car lengths over the rest of the field. Cordell ran second with Eddie Ray third for the first several laps. Parker Jameson and Terry Thurston swapped fourth and fifth as the halfway flags were displayed in a fast-paced race event.
The only caution of the race took place on lap 16 when Daniel Jameson slowed and eventually headed for the pits, his night ended. Over the final four laps, it was Brown and Cordell settling into their top two positions once again with Cordell doing everything he could to keep the leader’s pace. He came up just short, as Brown took the victory. Cordell, Parker Jameson, Eddie Ray and Bobby Emory rounded out the top five.
Freddie Hale and Charlie Meinders brought the Pure Stock feature to green, with Hale jumping out to the early lead. The first caution came out on lap two when Spencer Morgan spun in turn one. Back under green, Buck Simmons and Charlie Meinders battled for the lead the next few laps until the second caution appeared for a spinning car. With the field reset, Meinders remained out front.
Back under green, Chris Meinders took the lead out of a three-wide battle, held the lead with Simmons in second. Simmons moved got alongside Chris Meinders on lap seven and passed him in turn two. Meinders then made contact with the back of Simmons’ car and put himself in the wall in turn three, bringing out the third yellow flag of the event.
Simmons was able to continue, while Chris Meinders’ car was towed to the pits.
For the restart, Hale retook the lead, with Hank Hutto in second followed by Simmons, Morgan and Ashley Granata. Simmons went to the bottom and took the lead for good on lap eight, and went on to collect his second win of the season. Hale finished in second, with Hutto third, Granata fourth and Morgan in fifth.
Tim Sams brought the Super Stock field to green with Rick Stephens alongside. After a couple of false starts, Stephens got the jump, leading the first four laps before Sams moved by to take the top spot. Behind the leaders, Travis Cox raced to third, while Ken Guthrie and Mike Mote battled four fourth.
The first caution flew on lap 13 when Cox spun between turns one and two. That was when the race took a very strange turn – literally.
On the restart, Sams powered by Stephens to maintain the lead down the back straightaway. Guthrie, seeing an opportunity, powered under Stephens going into turn three. Stephens’ car broke loose, sending his car into a spin. His car then went airborne, jumping backwards over the inside wall and coming to rest against a pole in the infield of the race track.
Guthrie was uninjured, but the race had to be red flagged while track officials moved Guthrie’s car back onto the track. After as short pit stop, Guthrie was able to return to the race.
Back under green, Sams held the lead, and went on to score the win. Stanley Pressley Pressley put on a late race charge to finish second, with Stephens in third, Cox in fourth and Mote in fifth.
Guthrie worked his way up to sixth, but had to park the car a few laps shy of the finish. He would be credited with a seventh place finish.
Action returns to Greenville-Pickens Speedway on Saturday, March 19, with the Late Model Stocks competing in twin 75-lap features. Also on the card are the Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and Renegades.
