Saturday marked the final round of the 2011 No Box Series, along with the second to last Summit ET Series event at the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia.
Among the 2011 No Box champions crowned were Stan Sinack (6.50 Index champ), Woody Bryant (7.50 Index champ) and John Norris (Open Comp Full Body champ). In addition to winning the season points series, Sinack and Bryant also scored wins on the day. Four out of five of the “Wilson Gang” racers enjoyed finishing in the money rounds, Bruce Wilson (Pro winner), Brian Wilson (Motorcycle winner), Jessie Wilson (Pro semifinalist) and Marshall York (Bruce’s father in law – Sportsman semifinalist).
Stan Sinack of Lilburn, GA met Jefferson, GA racer Michael Goodwin once again in the 6.50 Index final in a battle of the Dodge Darts. Goodwin’s ’70 Dart actually ran closer to the index with a 6.505 at 103.88 mph, but Sinack’s ‘69 Dart used a slightly better reaction time to get the win light, posting a 6.516 at 102.09 mph time. Matt Ward (’69 Camaro – Fair Play, SC) earned the semi-finalist position.
“I feel fortunate that I did well again this year,” Sinack said.
Bowman, Georgia’s Woody Bryant made it three wins in a row in the 7.50 Index class, winning the race and sealing the championship by breaking out less than his formidable opponent and good friend John Norris during the final round. Bryant’s ’82 Camaro posted a 7.495 at 93.32 mph for the win. Norris actually crossed the finish line first, but earned the runner up spot by breaking out slightly more with a 7.491 at 85.13 mph. Peter Mansolillo (’80 Monza – Suwanee, GA) won the semi-finalist portion of the purse.
“We help each other out,” said Bryant of Norris, mentioning that Norris had just helped him change the spark plugs prior to this event.
“I would have been the last one to think I would win the championship,” he added.
Open Comp Full Body racer Jeremy Hancock of Commerce, GA was out to win a race, and although final round opponent John Norris from Royston, GA had already sewed up the 2011 Open Comp Full Body championship, that did not bother him. Hancock did his job well with a 0.021 react, coupled with a dead-on 6.042 at 113.35 mph in his ’76 Vega. Norris actually had a better react with a 0.013, but inexplicably slowed to a 7.54 at 82.33 mph in his ’86 Camaro at the finish line (7.48 dial).
“Driver error,” was Norris’ simple comment afterwards.
“I was glad to win with the Vega,” Hancock said. “We have done a tremendous amount of work on the car recently. It’s paying off though.”
Travis Bryant (’68 Camaro – Bowman, GA) and John Hobbs (’71 Vega – Conyers, GA) were the semi-final pair.
Super Pro racer Brad Howard of Gainesville, GA enjoyed his second victory and third 2011 final round appearance. He put a 4.85 dial in time on his ’03 Miller dragster before the first round, and never changed it all evening. Howard met another long time Atlanta Dragway regular, Matthew Bates from Loganville, GA. Bates actually had the better reaction time (0.010 to Howard’s 0.021), but unfortunately for Bates, his ’70 Datsun 240Z sped up a little and broke out with a 6.249 at 110.39 mph (6.26 dial). Howard’s time was 4.860 at 141.43 mph (4.85 dial).
Howard did make up some ground on points leader Jeremy Hancock, and moved into second place in the 2011 Super Pro points series. Bubba Rich (’02 Firebird – Gainesville, GA) was the semi-final finisher.
Pro winner Bruce Wilson from Tallapoosa, GA had several things working against him, but thanks to help from his fellow “Wilson Gang” members, he took the win by 0.02 seconds against Tifton, GA racer Ken Grant. Wilson recently moved to a manager’s position with Love’s Truck Stop in Waco, GA, which required him to be there until 6:00pm. He then traveled to Atlanta Dragway, arriving just in time for the race.
In addition, the starter bendix on his ’70 Nova was not working properly during the later rounds. His dad Jessie and father in law Marshall York had all the tools they needed in their hands when they came to the staging lanes, but fortunately the car started without incident.
At the starting line, Wilson reacted with a great 0.014 second time, and capped off the win with a one over 6.744 at 99.37 mph (6.73 dial). Grant’s stealth black ’72 Nova crossed the big end stripe 0.02 seconds later with an otherwise good 6.465 at 104.89 mph (6.45 dial). Bruce’s dad, Jessie Wilson (’70 Nova – Tallapoosa, GA) was the lone semi-finalist, courtesy of Bruce defeating him in the semi-final round.
Nick Wagner’s father and brothers are no stranger to the winner’s circle, and Nick enjoyed being the one tonight after winning Sportsman with his Jefferson, GA based ’04 Neon. Wagner met Allen Long from Ballground, GA in the final, and got the instant win after Long red-lighted by a heart breaking -0.006 seconds in his ’96 Silverado.
Seeing he already had the win, Wagner eased to a 9.25 at 78.811 mph (8.21 target). Long’s run was an otherwise excellent one, posting an 11.015 at 64.07 mph (11.01 dial). Marshall York (’87 Buick GN – Tallapoosa, GA) and Allen Schaffer (’83 Thunderbird – Austell, GA) ended their day in the semi-final round.
“We’re all family,” Wagner said. “It’s good to win one. This year it’s too little, too late for the points, but I’m still having fun.”
“Thanks to my dad Pete, brothers Steve, Jeff and Chris and mom Sharon,” he added.
Tallapoosa, GA Motorcycle racer Brian Wilson enjoyed visiting the winner’s circle again with his ’82 Suzuki. Wilson met current points leader Tim Sutton’s Clermont, GA based ’89 Suzuki in the final. Both racers were on their game, but in spite of a slightly better react by Sutton, Wilson got the nod at the big end stripe by 0.003 seconds with his machine, which posted a 5.52 at 124.45 mph (5.48 dial). Sutton’s mount went 5.55 at 114.05 mph (5.50 dial).
Phillip Freeland (’07 Kawasaki – Pleasantville, OH) and Jay Rhyne (’82 Kawasaki – Athens, GA) took home the semi-finalist portion of the purse.
“I want to thank the whole Wilson Gang race team,” Wilson said. “This makes two in a row for me now.”
