The battle for second-place in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series point standings tightened up after Week 25 competition. Just ten points separate second through sixth in the points chase and the fight for the tenth and final points fund-paying position is also up for grabs with two weeks to go in the 2015 season.
The 2015 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series National Champion Michael Arnold of Hattiesburg, MS continued his winning ways on Saturday night, as he topped a 23-car field at Jackson Motor Speedway to claim the $1,000 top prize at Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, MS driving The Strength Center Special.
Arnold has a perfect 14 week total of 700 points, representing 14 50-point wins. In 32 races, Arnold has turned in a new single-season series record of 19 wins, 24 top five finishes and 27 top ten finishes. Arnold has won at six different tracks this season, and a win at seventh track would be a new NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series single season record.
Mike Palasini Jr. of Leland, MS gained one point with a second-place finish on Saturday night at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS driving the MP Trucking Special. Palasini now has a best 14-week total of 693 points after eight wins and 17 top five finishes in 21 races to hold the second spot in the standings. Palasini is trying to earn the National Championship Runner-Up honors for the third straight season.
Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL traveled to Camden Speedway in Camden, TN looking for a third-place or better finish to net on a 47. Skinner finished sixth in the Skinner’s Body Shop CVR and his best 14 week total remains at 689 points and the third spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings.
In 23 races, Skinner has seven wins, 16 top five finishes and 20 top ten finishes. The 14-year-old driver continues to lead the Sunoco Young Guns Challenge Series point standings for NeSmith Late Model drivers 18 years of age and younger. Sunoco Race Fuels, the Official Race Fuel of NeSmith Racing, is putting up a $5,000 points fund that will pay the top Young Gun $1,000 at the end of the year, and pay back through the top ten spots.
Robbie Starnes of Livingston, TX finished second on Saturday night at Battleground Race Park in Highlands, TX to net one point and stay in the fourth spot of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with a best 14 week total of 688 points. Starnes has six wins, 20 top five finishes and 22 top ten finishes in 22 races driving the Lonestar Hydro Maintenance Special.
Noah Daspit of Kiln, MS is fifth in the standings with a best 14 week total of 685 points after seven wins, 14 top five finishes, and 19 top ten finishes in 24 races. Daspit took the Billy Riels Racing Special to Jackson Motor Speedway on Saturday night and finished 20th, therefore not netting any points.
Greg Fore of Greenville, MS closed in on Daspit from the sixth spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings after his fifth win of the season on Saturday night at Greenville Speedway driving the Washington Body Shop Rocket. Fore was able to net five points and now has a best 14 week total of 684 points after five wins, 14 top five finishes and 18 top ten finishes in 21 races.
Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS is seventh in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with a best 14 week total of 675 points after one win, 19 top five finishes, and 21 top ten finishes in 23 races. Lee finished 21st on Saturday night at Jackson Motor Speedway in the Billy Riels Racing Special.
Joseph Joiner of Milton, FL drove the Three Trade Consultants Special to a fourth-place finish on September 7 to open Week 25 competition at Flomaton Speedway in Flomaton, AL to stay on top of the NeSmith Panhandle Challenge Series point standings.
Joiner was able to net one point in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings and now has a best 14 week total of 669 points. Joiner is eighth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings after two wins, 17 top five finishes and 20 top ten finishes in 21 races.
Cole Daffron of Pell City, AL is ninth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with a best 14 week total of 656 points after 12 top five finishes and 15 top ten finishes in 17 races. Daffron finished fourth on Saturday night at Camden Speedway in the TSR Race Cars Warrior to net two points. The 17-year-old driver is second in the Sunoco Young Guns Challenge Series point standings.
Bobby Jordan of McCarley, MS drove the SMJ Race Parts Trak-Star to a sixth-place finish on Saturday night at Greenville Speedway to net four points and remains in the tenth and final points fund-paying spot. Jordan has a best week total of 653 points after two wins, ten top five finishes and 15 top ten finishes in 25 races.
In other NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Week 25 action, Ricky Begnaud of Spring, TX drove the Roof Tech Special to his first win of the season on Saturday night at Battleground Race Park. Dennis Bush of Cedar Grove, TN drove the Bush Racing Special to his second win of the season on Saturday night at Camden Speedway. The Friday night race at Hattiesburg Speedway in Hattiesburg, MS was rained out.
A reported equipment change has required an update of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufactures Challenge points. Fore gave Rocket Chassis of Shinnston, WV their 14th win of the season and the point lead.
Three-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Champion Trak-Star Race Cars built by Boland Performance of Cuba, AL and four-time Champion GRT Race Cars of Greenbrier, AR are tied for the second spot with 13 wins apiece. CVR Race Cars of Lenoir City, TN is fourth with seven wins and Warrior Race Cars built by Goddard Performance of Knoxville, TN is still looking for their first win of the season.
