Wesley Mayfield topped the field in Super Pro Field action to score the win in Saturday’s Summit ET Series event at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA.
Mayfield, of Gainesville, GA, prevailed with a dead-on 4.781 second pass in his ’03 Worthy dragster at 137.83 mph. Hank Wilhelm (’96 Ed Quay dragster – Maysville, GA) didn’t leave him much room to work with, posting a 5.15 at 127.99 mph (5.13 dial). Brian Smith (’07 Undercover dragster – Flowery Branch, GA) and Tim Gibson (’84 Daytona – Walhalla, SC) were the semi-finalist pair.
Pro winner Mel Abney of Cumming, GA has scored several Sportsman championships in the past, and moved into Pro class last season with his ’65 Chevy II. Saturday night, Abney used a perfect 0.000 second reaction time to score his first ever division win, crossing the top end stripe ahead of Keith Tullar’s ’85 Monte Carlo SS with an off the throttle 7.22 at 81.38 mph (7.13 dial). Tullar’s Monroe, GA based machine posted a 7.71 at 88.93 mph (7.69 dial). Rob Hogue (’68 Camaro – Loganville, GA) and David Simmons (’00 S10 – Suwannee, GA) ended their day in the semi-final round.
Mike Bell from Snellville, GA began racing in Sportsman again this year after taking off 22 years from racing for his family. He spent the first few events figuring out his ’96 Corvette, and returned with a vengeance to his old form, hitting his dials within one hundredth of a second for the last four rounds. He actually broke out by two thousandths of a second in the final (14.068 at 97.90 mph on a 14.07 dial) against Dickey Forrester (’68 Camaro – Hickory Flat, GA), but Forrester broke out more with a 12.08 at 108.32 mph (12.14 dial). Austin Smith (’70 Nova – Baldwin, GA) and Scott Reynolds (’02 Camaro – Cartersville, GA) took home the semi-finalist portion of the purse.
For the second Summit ET Series event in a row, Jimmy “ChaCha” Heisler from Woodstock, GA took the number one spot in Super Pro Bike with his no-electronics ’00 Kawasaki against David Fletcher of Lawrenceville, GA. Heisler reacted first with a 0.012 second time and sealed the deal again with a 10.81 at 117.06 mph (10.79 dial). Fletcher’s ’84 Kawasaki was bearing down on him fast, and stopped the timers with 8.93 at 144.97 mph (8.91 dial). Dave Hamilton (’06 Suzuki – Braselton, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.
Randall Long (’06 Suzuki – Buckhead, GA) took the number one spot for the first time this year against Adam Edwards (’05 Hayabusa – Winder, GA). Long capped his day with a dead-on 9.454 at 136.07 mph, taking the finish line stripe 0.017 seconds in front of Edwards, who carded a 9.46 at 134.12 mph (9.38 dial). For the second event in a row, Angie Young (Slick Wicked ’12 Kawasaki – Anderson, SC) made it to the semi-final round, along with Randy Barnett (’08 Suzuki – Colbert, GA).
After cutting identical reaction times, Jessie Daniel (14 years old – Loganville, GA) scored the 13-17 Jr Dragster win after an ultra close finish against Robby Pettinato (17 – Fountain Inn, SC). Only 0.007 separated the two racers at the stripe. Pettinato was actually the first one to cross the finish line, but he broke out with a 7.926 at 80.85 mph (7.93 dial). Daniel took the trophy with a dead-on 7.923 at 81.35mph. Austin Carden (16 – McDonough, GA) was the semi-final finisher.
10-12 Jr Dragster winner Adam Brown (11 – Covington, GA) cut a better light, and then used his 0.02 over 9.23 at 68.39 mph (9.21 dial) to take the win against Nate Halsey (12 – Clermont, GA), who was competing in his second final of the day. Halsey also carded a 0.02 over 9.04 at 70.07mph. Carter Marsengill (12 – Clarkesville, GA) scored a semi-final finish.
Cole Wilson (7 – Tallapoosa, GA) faced Stephen Skelton (7 – Clermont, GA) for the final. Although Wilson slowed a bit from his 15.04 dial, his 15.29 at 38.51mph took the win after Skelton turned on the foul light at the starting line en route to a 14.60 pass at 45.21 mph (14.35 dial). Alayna Carden (7 – McDonough, GA) was the semi-finalist.
The Jr. Dragster divisions ended up with double features due to a recent rainout.
Eighteen year old Bailey Brown from McDonough, GA scored the Night of Fire win in 13-17 Jr Dragster after defeating Austin Carden (16 – McDonough, GA) in the final Brown’s times were 7.97 at 81.33 mph (7.91 dial). Carden’s red light negated an otherwise good 7.95 at 80.56 mph (7.90 dial). Rachel Flowers (14 – Loganville, GA) and Macey Ludolph (13 – Snellville, GA) were the semi-finalist pair.
Nate Halsey took the first spot in the rain delayed Night of Fire 10-12 Jr Dragster class with a 0.006 second react, coupled with an off the throttle 9.06 at 65.61 mph (8.98 dial). Cannon Stiles (10 – Winder, GA) was the semi-final finisher.
Cole Wilson doubled up with his Night of Fire win against Kimberly Vancica (7 – Lawrenceville, GA). Wilson posted a 0.01 second over 15.03 at 39.60 mph (15.02 dial) for the win. Vancica’s 11.94 at 53.84 mph (11.90 dial) was also good, but turning on foul light at the starting line gave Wilson the nod. Alayna Carden (7 – McDonough, GA) and Stephen Skelton (7 – Clermont, GA) ended their day with a semi-final finish.
