Exploding fireworks lit up the sky over Atlanta Motor Speedway Friday night, as the Papa John’s Pizza Fireworks Extravaganza kicked off the Fourth of July Weekend ahead of Week 10 of O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags. Following the kaleidoscopic regalement, it was business as usual on the pit lane drag strip.
One-by-one, preliminary races narrowed the field of competitors before giving way to the semi-final rounds. Eventually the final round pitted the two fastest vehicles of the night in each division against each other for a winner-take-all finale.
Bobby Bramblett is no stranger to the nightly finale. Driving a modified 1970 Volkswagen Beetle in the Sport Compact Division, Bramblett made his third straight appearance in the final round, still seeking his first win.
Inching to the the start line, Bramblett looked over to see Charles Myers, no stranger to the final round himself, in the lane beside him. Both drivers were making their third appearance in the nightly division finale, but it was Bramblett who prevailed for his first victory in 2015.
“I’ve been trying to win one, and something has happened every time I get up there,” said Bramblett. “But I had a blast. It’s really a lot of fun.”
In the Truck Division, Shelton Maynard beat out two-time winner Brian Leath in the final for his first victory of the season. His 1972 Chevrolet C-10 was more than Leath’s 1976 version of the same truck could handle in a rematch of the Week 7 final round matchup.
“Me and Brian are always pretty close,” said Maynard, noting that the last race was probably his best of the evening.
Maynard moves into a third-place tie in the Truck Division championship point standings heading into Week 11, four points behind leader James Ragsdale.
Other notable winners on Friday night include Andrew Morgan, driving a 1987 Ford Mustang in the Harding Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Domestic Division, Stephen DeFayette, driving a 1988 Mazda RX7 in the Harbin’s Mechanical Services Domestic Advanced Division, and Eugene Lamar, on his 2013 Harley Road Glide, in the Thunder Tower West Harley-Davidson Cruiser/Dirt Motorcycle Division.
Drivers in the Harbin’s Mechanical Services Super Pro Division, Atlanta Journal-Constitution Pro Division and Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Division were set to make their mark in their respective final-round races, but untimely inclement weather descended on the track, putting a stop on the races before they could begin. Those races were postponed and will run next week, during Week 11.
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags continues with Week 11 on Friday, July 10.
