Week 7 of O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags and Show-N-Shine descended on Atlanta Motor Speedway Friday night in the third week of racing for keeps.
While several drivers are settling in nicely and stacking up the wins, many more are still getting the hang of the pit lane as they chase the leaders in their respective divisions.
One such driver emerging from the field is Keith Shockey of Fayetteville, GA, who earned his first win of the season in the Factory Street Division behind the wheel of his 2015 Dodge Challenger and broke out of the points standings cellar.
“I’ve been out here three times, and tonight went a lot better than the first two weeks,” said Shockey. “I’m finally starting to learn how to drive.”
In the division finals, Shockey knocked off Zachary Stripling, who won the division last week in a 2014 Ford Mustang and currently sits in second place in the points standings.
“It’s fun. There’s a lot of good people out here, and it’s just a good time,” added Shockey. He’ll will look to carry the momentum into Week 8 next Friday night and inch ever closer to the division lead.
Jay Velez made it look easy in his Street Outlaw Division debut, winning each of his preliminary, semi-final and final-round races by more than a few car lengths. His 1981 Toyota Starlet, though small in stature, packs a punch under the hood.
“It’s been a great night. (There was) great racing, awesome weather, and the track’s been prepped really well,” said Velez.
Velez last competed several weeks ago with his Starlet in the Harbin’s Mechanical Services Super Pro Division but made some modifications to the car and debuted in the new division Friday night.
Valez figures to be a favorite in the division each week, but when it comes to the competition, he’s not quite ready to show his hand.
“I don’t know yet,” he said. “There’s a good field of cars, so every week there’s something different.”
Other notable winners include Billy Clevenger in the Harbin’s Mechanical Services Super Pro Division and his brother, David, in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Pro Division. Both won their respective divisions the previous week, with Billy making it three in a row to open the points season and take an early stranglehold on the fastest division.
