Joe Armistead, Jr. used every bit of the 30 lap feature to secure his second Super Late Model win of the season at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA Saturday night.

After he was forced to the pits to change a flat tire on lap 22, Armistead charged back to overtake Scott Groves in the final turn of the final lap. It culminated a main event that featured a wild twist of events over the final ten laps.

Clint ‘Cat Daddy’ Smith earned the pole position for the Super Late Model feature by edging out Armistead, Jr. by two thousandths of a second in qualifying. Armistead shot out to the lead on the drop of the green flag, building a several length command on Smith.

By lap 18, Smith began to close on Armistead and looked to be on trek to overtake him. That soon changed as Smith’s ride began to overheat.

On lap 22, Smith’s engine blew just as Armistead’s rear tire went flat. Both of the race’s leaders, who had lapped everyone but Scott Groves, would have to go to the pit area. This turn of events allowed Shane Fulcher and Maddie Crane to gain back their lost lap and gave Groves the lead.

Groves’ ride was also running hot as the field took the green with Armistead charging back from the pit area. The final restart allowed Armistead to close on Groves and eventually pass him in the final turn for the victory. Groves would settle for second, with Crane in third and Fulcher in fourth.

Armistead’s son, Joey Armistead, came into the night riding a four race win streak in the Limited Late Models. Just like his father, Armistead would lead his feature race at the initial drop of the green flag. But on lap four, Austin Horton slid under Armistead on lap four only to have the 17-year-old come back to retake the lead. The pair swapped the lead position twice more before Horton settled in for the chase to the checkered flag. Horton would win for the first time since early April, with Dennis hale in second, Armistead in third, Glenn Morris in fourth and Marcus Caswell in fifth.

Dylan Knowles was awarded the Crate Late Model ‘bonus’ prize Saturday night after apparent winner Matt Black refused to teardown his engine after a post-race protest. Competitors are allowed to protest various components on each other’s race cars for further inspection after the race. If a driver does not agree to the technical inspection, they forfeit their position, prize money and points for the event.

Ryan Ray had been close a couple of times in Hobby Stock action this season only to have bad luck come his way. Ray and Gary Brand raced side-by-side through the turns for several laps with Brand getting the upper hand on the straightaways. Ray’s fortunes turned on lap 13 when Brand spun on his own exiting turn four.

Ray went on to score his first win at Senoia Raceway. Sam Carter finished in second, with Clyde Alexander in third Wilson Boozer in fourth and Brand in fifth.

In the Bomber feature, Chris Holt powered to the lead with Tim Harmon and Jim Jackson in tow. Three separate cautions ended the night’s run for Harmon, then Jackson and finally Holt. Lee Owenby, Jr. inherited the lead after Holt’s demise and then held off Jim Jackson for the win. Pappy Powell finished third.

Brannon Knight was the winner in the Mini-Stock feature, with Mike Minor, Mark Newton, Todd Brewster and James Stansell rounding out the top five.

Senoia Raceway returns to action on Saturday, June 13, featuring the Limited Late Model ‘Summer Sizzler”, along with racing from the Super Late Models, Crate Late Models, B Cadets, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Bombers and Legends Cars.
