Montgomery Motor Speedway in Montgomery, AL opened its 2015 season Saturday night, as home state heroes Augie Grill and Bret Holmes split the “Show Me The Money” Pro Late Model double bill.
Grill set fast time for the first PLM feature, but rolled a six on the inversion, putting Justin South on the pole. But before the green flag was waved, South pulled into the pits with mechanical issues and had to drop to the rear.
Nineteen cars took the green and roared into turn one, only to have the field slowed as the Jordan McCallum suffered a mechanical failure in the drive train and spun on the back stretch. The next start saw Kory Ruble move to the point. The caution flag flew again on lap seven for contact between Grill and Riley Thornton.
Following another caution flag, Dennis Reno took the lead on the restart and looked strong as he to the. The final caution of the event flew when Thornton made hard contact Chuck Tuck, causing major damage to both racecars.
Meanwhile, the battle for the front spot was intense as Grill stalked Reno over the closing laps. Grill would finally power his way around Reno for the lead, and went on to score the victory. Chase Oliver finished in second, with Bret Holmes third, Perry Patino fourth and Luke Christian fifth.

In the second PLM feature, Perry Patino went for a spin early on and repeated a few laps later, completing only six laps. Oil was reported to the tower and the MMS cleanup crew hit the track to fix the issue. Grill’s car was checked at the start finish line and sent to the pits for fluid leaking on lap nine.
Bill Bethea III was on the point for the early laps, while Bobby Knox, Jr., Justin South and Dennis Reno moved through the field.
As the race wound down, Ruble paced the field with Bret Holmes in pursuit. On the final lap, a spin against the wall in turn three brought the two leaders together for a side-by-side battle to the finish. Holmes edged out Ruble for the win, with South in third, Knox, Jr. in fourth and Christian in fifth.
In other action, the Late Model Sportsman feature saw Jason Furrow move to the point early, while other drivers suffered misfortunes. Brad Edwards suffered damage during qualifying earlier and had to limp his car around the speedway to gain much needed championship points. Joey Holt experienced problems early and found his way to the pits on lap nine.

The scariest incident occurred on lap 11, when fire broke out under Larry Speakman’s car, bringing out the caution.
Back under green, Furrow found himself under attack, as Joe Hudson powered past on lap 17. Hudson would drive away to score the victory, with Furrow in second, Shelby Reuse in third, Brad Edwards in fourth and Larry Speakman in fifth.
In the Street Stock feature, Charles Davis jumped out to the quick lead, and would stay there for the first four laps until Joe Bethea, Jr. moved to the top spot on lap four. Meanwhile, defending division champion Dwayne Wesenberg moved to the second position, and gave pursuit to the leader.
Things went south for Bethea, Jr. when he was gathered up into an accident when Andrew Wiggins spun on lap 13, handing the lead to Wesenberg. Wesenberg would hold the spot until lap 34, when Chance Atkins made the pass for the lead and went on to score the victory. Wesenberg finished in second, with Davis in third, Bethea, Jr. in fourth and Wiggins in fifth.
In the Modified Minis feature, Adam Gunter and Chris Frost both spun down the frontstretch, sending both cars to the pits. As the race finally got underway, Chris Landers moved to the lead, a spot he would hold until the end. Joel Collier finished in second, with Rusty Alverson in third, Steve Looney in fourth and Eddie Dodd in fifth.
Action continues at Montgomery Motor Speedway on April 11, as the Modified of Mayhem Tour makes its debut at the raceway, while the Late Model Sportsman divison will compete in twin 20 lap races, along with Modified Minis and Street Stocks.
