Championship night at Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags & MCR Safety Show-N-Shine saw several drag racing divisions take their season points championships down to the wire in the championship match races following week 16 final round elimination races.
To determine the overall season champion this year, the first-half points champion took on the second-half points champion in a match race. The format squared off the two best drivers in each division, producing exciting racing that thrilled the fans in attendance.
Saving the best for last, the Super Pro division saw first-half champion Mark White of McDonough face off against second-half champion Tony Morse of Grantville. White’s Shelby Mustang, featuring a new block after engine problems in the second-half of the season, beat out Morse’s Trans-Am by a fender, earning him the 2011 Super Pro division championship.
Another exciting championship race took place in the Domestic division. First-half champion and Grayson native Gene Daniel took on second-half champion Ron Wiese of McDonough for the season crown. Daniel guided his Ford Coupe down the pit lane drag strip the quickest, becoming the Domestic division season champion for 2011.
Other 2011 season champions are David Harbin of McDonough (Pro), Jason Thomas of Stockbridge (Street Outlaw), Vic Vickers of McDonough (Sportsman), Danny Mason of Locust Grove (Truck Advanced), Rick Gilbert of Locust Grove (Diesel Truck), David Sheffield of Covington (Truck), Stephen DeFayette of Sharpsburg (Domestic Advanced), Mike Chambers of Griffin (Pro Four), Ruben Quiambao of the Philippines (Sport Compact), Nicolas Feliciano of Griffin (Tuner), Michael Gamble of McDonough (Super Bike), Kevin Connolly of Hampton (Sport Bike), Jason Lowery of Williamson (Street Motorcycle I), Chad Meadows of Loganville (Street Motorcycle II) and Jacob Turner of Griffin (Cruiser/Dirt Bike).
AMS will honor the 2011 season champions during the pre-race ceremonies for the AdvoCare 500 on Sunday, September 4. Championship-winning drivers will be introduced to the crowd following the Fast Cars and Guitars concert featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd, just prior to the introduction of the 43-car starting field for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series night race. The top three drivers in each division will receive season awards.
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags announces the Fall Stampede on September 23 and September 30. While the weather turns cooler, the pit lane drag strip at Atlanta Motor Speedway gets hotter with two additional nights of racing.
