HAMPTON, GA – With double points on the line, competitors battled for position in multiple divisions on the pit lane drag strip in Week 12 of O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Michael Ramsey of Canton in his Undercover Dragster could not keep his slim hopes of back-to-back season championships in the Jailhouse Brewing Company Super Pro division alive despite a final round win on double points night.

“We didn’t start racing this year until the sixth week,” said Ramsey. “This year was all about coming back and having some fun and running a few races. My wife and I enjoy this and love coming here. It’s just a great time.”

In the elimination final, Ramsey was slow off the line, but punched the nitrous half way down the track and powered past Billy Clevenger of Jonesboro in a 1963 Chevrolet Chevelle.

“I rebuilt the entire motor over the winter,” said Ramsey. “Honestly, the car over powers the track. I tuned it down for that final run and fortunately when the second stage of nitrous kicked in, I ran the Chevelle down.”

Arnie Cobb of Locust Grove in his 1974 Chevrolet Nova earned two points with an opening round pass down the pit lane drag strip and put the season points championship out of Ramsey’s reach. Cobb leads Tony Bird of Stockbridge by three points in the Jailhouse Brewing Company Super Pro division with two events remaining.

Tony Morse of Grantville helped David Harbin of McDonough extend his lead in the Pro division. Substituting for an ill Harbin, Morse piloted the 1969 Chevrolet Nova to a final round elimination victory.

“David called and asked if I wanted to drive and I said ‘Why not?’,” explained Morse. “I was keeping my car going with my son in the sportsman division while David’s crew was keeping me going in the car which made it real easy.”

Tony’s son Joshua Morse in a 1981 Chevrolet Malibu was eliminated in the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman division final by Terry Wells of Conley in a 1984Chevrolet S-10. The win was Well’s first trip to victory lane this year at drags.

Other close points races entering Week 12 included the Street Outlaw division. An elimination round win by Gary Thomas of McDonough in a 1974 Chevrolet Nova over Donald Wiles of Stockbridge and his 1989 Chevrolet S10 helped Thomas open up a big lead in the division. Thomas now leads Andrew Pride of Stockbridge in the Street Outlaw division by six points.

Terry Bates of Locust Grove closed the gap in the Domestic Advanced division with a final elimination round win to pull within four points of the 1997 Chevrolet S10 of Hampton’s Jason Kinard. Behind the wheel of a 1988 Ford Mustang, Bates knocked off newcomer Scott Milner of Covington and his 1985 Ford LTD.
