COMMERCE, GA – For the second time this season, Jr Dragster racers were treated to a double race event Saturday at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA. The Halsey family of Clermont, GA was in the spotlight, as son Nate Halsey and daughter Maddie Kate Halsey won their Jr Dragster classes in race 2.
Nate Halsey scored his win during race 2 in the 8-12 Jr Dragster class. The winning time was 8.96 at 71.71 mph (8.95 dial). However, his opponent was “Wilson Gang” racer Jacob Wilson (9 – Tallapoosa, GA) turned on the red light in the final, negating an otherwise good 8.97 at 71.53 mph pass (8.94 dial). Thomas Black (9 – Canton, GA) was the single semi-final finisher.
Maddie Kate Halsey earned the 13-17 Jr Dragster win, also during race 2, against Maddie Lee from Campobello, SC. Halsey came out on top at the big end of the track with a mere 0.008 second margin of victory, carding an 8.107 at 87.90 mph on an 8.08 dial. Lee’s time was 7.93 at 82.62 mph (7.90 dial). Austin Solesbee (16 – Sautee, GA) and Charlie Smith (14 – Woodstock, GA) were listed as the semi-final finishers.
Today’s event featured not one, but two complete Jr Dragster races.
8-12 Jr Dragster race 1 featured 12 year old Austin Bowden from Homer, GA taking the win against Nate Halsey. Wallace Wilson (10 – Taylors, SC) made it to the semi-finals.
Hunter Ramsey (16 – Commerce, GA) also earned his third ever win in 13-17 Jr Dragster race 1. Ramsey met Tori Crowe (14 – Covington, GA) in the final, and used a 7.96 at 78.85 mph (7.90 dial) for the win, taking the stripe 0.039 seconds ahead of Crowe, who posted a 9.12 at 70.46 mph (9.03 dial).
In other action, Joe Haddon of Oxford, GA had to be ready for Super Pro final round opponent Jeremy Hancock. Haddon reacted first with a 0,002 second time in his ’08 Undercover dragster, followed closely by Hancock’s Commerce, GA based ’05 Undercover dragster. At the top end stripe, Haddon went 4.776 at 144.74mph on a 4.77 dial, with Hancock close on his heels, but 0.0003 seconds behind, breaking out with a 4.739 at 142.93 mph (4.74 dial). Gary Milligan (’02 Undercover dragster – Oxford, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.
By the final round of the Pro event, Steve Wagner and his family were beginning to get a complex about Jody Blalock, Sr. With six cars left, three of them were Wagners. Brother Jeff Wagner was Blalock’s quarter final victim and dad Pete was the semi-final victim, leaving it to Steve to get the win in the final round. Steve did well in his Jefferson, GA based ’69 Dart, carding a 7.79 at 87.71 mph (7.76 dial). However, Blalock made the job easier with a -0.006 second red light in his Commerce, GA based ’49 Hudson en route to a 6.91 at 98.56 mph (6.85 dial). Pete Wagner (’71 Demon – Jefferson, GA) was the semi-final purse winner.
Sportsman winner Austin Smith from Baldwin, GA began racing last year with the help of his dad Eric Smith, and enjoyed his first ever win in his ’70 Nova against veteran Russell Haskins of Marietta, GA. Smith’s better react made the difference, and he posted a 12.83 at 103.94 mph (12.79 dial). Haskin’s ’13 Mustang broke out with a 12.58 at 112.21 mph on a 12.61 target. Marshall York (’72 Nova – Tallapoosa, GA) ended his day in the semi-final round. Smith came close a few weeks ago, making it to the runner up spot then.
Hot off a win in Bristol last week, Super Pro Bike winner Jay Rhyne declared about his final round opponent Jimmy Heisler, “I had to shut him down. I couldn’t let him win two weeks in a row.” Rhyne backed that up with a 0.005 react and a very good 9.47 at 127.28 mph (9.45 dial) on his Athens, GA based ’82 Suzuki. Heisler’s reaction time was no slouch, at 0.037 seconds, but his ’00 Kawasaki went off pace a bit to a 10.85 at 122.12 mph (10.80 dial). Tim Sutton (’83 Suzuki – Clermont, GA) and Randy Barnett (’08 Suzuki – Colbert, GA) ended their run in the semi-final round.
Heisler wasn’t too disappointed, as he went on to win in Street ET Bike class on his ’00 Kawasaki. Heisler’s final round opponent was Randall Long from Madison, GA. Long made it a bit easier when his bike left the starting line too early, leaving the dreaded tomato colored bulb glowing. Heisler eased off at mid track on the way to an 11.79 at 121.39 mph (10.81 dial). Knowing it was over, Long turned off his throttle and coasted to an 18.77 at 115.68 mph (9.40 dial). Allen Hitt (’99 Kawasaki – Cartersville, GA) and Tom Ulrich (Kawasaki – Kennesaw, GA) earned points up to the semi-final round.
