McDaniel Picks Up First Hickory Late Model Win Of 2014

Austin McDaniel picked up his first Bojangles’ Late Model victory of the 2014 season in Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway in Newton, NC.

Josh Berry started on the pole and brought the field to the green flag. Following a lengthy caution period for a multi-car pileup on lap 4, Berry remained in the lead with McDaniel restarting second. McDaniel battled for the lead at the restart and settled into the top position on lap six, remaining there until the checkered flag waved. Ashley Huffman and Dillon Bassett closed in to challenge for the lead but at the line it was McDaniel with the win, A. Huffman in second, Bassett in third, Justin Crider in fourth and Berry finishing fifth.

Mark Johnson led the Gold King Limited Late Model division to the green flag for a 35-lap event and raced side-by-side with Jeremy Pelfrey until the second lap when Pelfrey took over the top spot. Following a lap three caution, Pelfrey and Johnson resumed their battle for the top spot with Johnson pulling out front. As the laps ticked away, Taylor Stricklin tried get into the mix for the lead, but it was Johnson who would claim the victory leaving Stricklin to finish in second, with Pelfrey in third, Trent Barnes in fourth and Evan Duggins in fifth.

Kevin Eby earned the pole position for the Street Stock race and went on to lead all 30 laps of the event on his way to victory lane. The field was slowed on lap five for the stalled car of Kevin Saam on the backstretch, lining up the field for a restart. Eby remained out front, leaving Kevin Townsend in second, Michael Edwards in third, Mart Whitten in fourth and Jonathan Smith in fifth.

The 4-Cylinders hit the track for a 25-lap race, with Matt Elledge leading the way. Within the first five laps the top three qualifiers, Elledge, Eddie Gilbert and Larry Pollard had created a comfortable lead over the field. The eight-car field kept the action clean, leaving Elledge to pick up the win in the caution free event. Pollard, Gilbert, Dennis Trivette Rob Lewis rounded out the top five.

Darren Dickerson took the green flag from the pole position in the WrenchRags Renegades feature, but soon relinquished the top stop to Carroll McKinney. McKinney went on to win the 20-lap event, with Dickerson finishing in second, followed by Kenneth Roberts in third, Shawn Hayes in fourth and Stephen Shore in fifth.

Hickory Motor Speedway will take this weekend off, and will return to action on May 24, with action from the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Bojangles’ Late Models, the Gold King Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Super Trucks and the WrenchRags Renegades.
