Adam Gauldin of Talladega, AL still sits atop of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series point standings after turning in his sixth top five finish of the season on Saturday night in Week 6 action at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL. Gauldin finished third in the Adam Gauldin Racing GRT to bring his season total to 291 points.
Gauldin has two wins, six top five finishes and seven top ten finishes in seven races to hold a three-point lead over Daniel Bridgmon of Meridian, MS, who drove the Robinson Electric Supply Special to a fourth-place finish on Saturday night at St. Tammany Raceway in Lacombe, LA. Bridgmon has 288 points after two wins, six top five finishes and seven top ten finishes in seven races.
Mike Combs of Odenville, AL is third in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with 279 points after one win, four top five finishes and seven top ten finishes in seven races driving the Pro Graphx Special. Comb’s best finish in Week 6 competition was a fourth-place effort on Friday night at Talladega Short Track.
Just seven points separate fourth through ninth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings. Doug Sanchagrin of Florence, MS and 12-year-old Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL are tied for the fourth spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with 257 points apiece.
Sanchagrin turned in a seventh-place finish on Saturday night at St. Tammany Raceway in the Permanent Exterior Solutions Trak-Star. Sanchagrin has one top five finish and three top ten finishes in seven races. Skinner finished fourth on Saturday at Talladega Short Track in the Skinner Body Shop Special for his first top five finish of the season to go with four top ten finishes in eight races.
Kyle Clifton of Ranburne, AL is tied with Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS for the sixth spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with 256 points apiece. Clifton has one top five finish and four top ten finishes in six races. Clifton finished outside the top ten on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track, but still earned 41 points driving the Clifton Racing GRT.
Lee has five top five finishes in eight races, and his best finish of the weekend was a second-place run on Friday night at Hattiesburg Speedway driving the Billy Riels Racing GRT. All of that makes for a one point different from fourth through seventh in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series point standings.
The Alabama Gang was honored at that other track across the street from Talladega Short Track by having the back straightaway named after them. The senior member of the Alabama Gang, 80-something-year-old Red Farmer of Hueytown, AL is the only charter member of the Alabama Gang still racing, and he is still in the Top 10 of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series point standings.
Farmer is eighth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with 255 points, and just two points out of fourth-place in the points chase. In seven races, Farmer has one top five finish and two top ten finishes driving the Long-Lewis Ford Special. Justin Angle of Anniston, AL is ninth in the standings with 250 points after one top ten finish in seven races driving the J&S Racing Rocket.
The defending NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series National Champion Noah Daspit of Kiln, MS used a fourth-place run on Friday night at Hattiesburg Speedway in the Billy Riels Racing Trak-Star to move into the tenth spot the standings with 238 points. Daspit has three wins and five top five finishes in six races.
Of the ten NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model races contested in Week 6 competition, there were nine first-time winners. The only repeat winner was Ryan King of Seymour, TN, who drove the Brian King Roofing Stinger to his second $1,000 win of the season on Friday night over a 20-car field at 411 Motor Speedway in Seymour, TN.
Michael Arnold of Hattiesburg, MS took his first NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series win of the season on Friday night at Hattiesburg Speedway driving The Strength Center Trak-Star. Darrick Klima of Belleville, KS was a first time winner on Friday night at Salina Speedway in Salina, KS driving the Mike’s Body Shop Special.
Logan Yates of Lineville, AL picked up his first NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model win of the season on Friday night at Talladega Short Track in the NSC Heating and Cooling Special. Jon Biles of Centerville, AL drove the Biles Welding Special to his first win of the season on Saturday night at Arkadelphia Speedway in Bremen, AL.
Bronson Berry of Huntingdon, TN was a first-time 2014 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model winner on Saturday night at Camden Speedway in Camden, TN driving the Garner Brothers Farms Special. Mike Palasini, Jr. of Leland, MS won the season opener on Saturday night at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS driving the MP Trucking Special.
Kody Barber of Bogalusa, LA was a first-time winner this season at St. Tammany Raceway on Saturday night driving the Barber Racing Special. Grant Pearl of Anniston, AL took his first win of the season on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track driving the Griffin Trucking Special.
Braden Mitchell of Russellville, AL in the Sparks, Inc. Special was awarded the win on Sunday afternoon of the Saturday night race at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL after the apparent first and second-place cars were protested, inspected, and disqualified.
Apparent winner Billy Tedford of Thaxton, MS refused to tear down the engine in his Advance Auto Parts Trak-Star and was disqualified. The engine of the apparent second-place driver, Billy Flannigan of Tuscumbia, AL, was inspected by NeSmith Racing Technical Director Tim Sims on Sunday. The engine in Flannigan’s Rattle Snake Saloon Special was found to have valve springs that did not meet the series specifications and was also disqualified.
Arnold’s win gave Trak-Star Race Cars built by Boland Performance of Cuba, AL sole possession of first-place in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufacturers Challenge point standings with seven wins on the season. Trak-Star Race Cars was in a three-way tie with Rocket Chassis of Shinnston, WV and GRT Race Cars of Greenbrier, AR.
Rocket Chassis and GRT Race Cars are now tied for the second spot with six wins apiece. CVR Race Cars of Lenoir City, TN is fourth spot in the standings with two wins, and Warrior Race Cars built by Goddard Performance of Knoxville, TN is fourth spot in the chassis standings with one win.
TNT Race Cars of Piney Flats, TN is also participating in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufacturers Challenge and is still looking for their first win of the 2014 season.
