On Friday night, when Wayne Johnson thought there was no way he would be racing, let alone winning, the odds turned in favor of the Knoxville, Iowa driver and he started on the front row of the final preliminary 25-lap feature leading up to the East Bay Raceway’s 16th Annual King of 360’s and ended up in victory lane at the Tampa, FL speedway with a check for $1,500.
Danny Wood from Norman, Oklahoma and Johnson brought the field to the initial green ahead of Lou Kennedy and Bryan Sebetto in row two.
Johnson moved out front to lead the field before the only yellow flag of the night waved for Chad Kemenah who spun on the back stretch collecting Hud Horton. Back under green, Johnson continued his domination as he pulled away from Wood, Sebetto and Greg Wilson.
Johnson would see no serious challenges the rest of the way as he powered to the victory.
“I’m just a poor boy from Oklahoma trying to make my dreams come true,” Johnson said in victory lane. “I wish my wife and daughter, Erin and Paige were here to see this. Al (Varnadore) and his crew did a job on this track and my hat’s off to them.”
Referring to his previous win of the Ronald Laney Memorial in 2010, he indicated he can’t wait until Saturday’s $10,000-to-win race. With this win it assures him a front row starting spot.
Wood finished in second, with Sebetto in third, Wilson in fourth and Rico Abreu in fifth.
Lou Kennedy, Terry McCarl, Danny Holtgraver, Jac Haudenschild and David Gravel rounded out the top ten.
The final event of the night belonged to the Florida Mini Sprints, as Alex Bright turned his first visit to East Bay Raceway Park into a trip to victory lane with a win.
Jim Young and Luke Thomas would make up the front row. Thomas was looking to make it back-to-back wins after winning on Thursday night. When the green dropped it was Thomas finding himself in the lead for the first nine laps until the first caution came out as Dave Hall bounced off the backstretch wall and would come to rest. Hall was able to continue on.
The green waved once again and Thomas held the lead until Tyler Walton took over on lap ten. A caution came out on the next lap with four cars tangling in turns one and two.
Caution would come out again just two laps later with Robbie Hoffman slowing down ending his night.
On lap fifteen, Bright drove to the outside of turn four as Walton seemed to hit the inside burm, upsetting his car and allowing Bright to drive past him.
Bright would go on to score the victory.
