With only three weeks left in the 2011 Friday Night Drags & MCR Safety Show-N-Shine season, second half points become ever more critical with each run down the pit lane drag strip at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
One division that continues to tighten up is the Super Pro division. With first half champion Mark White sidelined with a mechanical issue, it has become a highly competitive grouping. Bobby Daniel and second half points leader Tony Morse squared off in the final, with Daniel speeding to victory. It was Daniel’s first win of the year, tightening up the race to determine who will face White on championship night.
After a short hiatus, first half points champion Rick Gilbert returned to action in the Diesel Truck division. His truck appeared to be helped from the time off, as his 1995 Dodge Ram was hooked up throughout the night. It was his sixth win of the year.
Drivers like Gilbert who have missed time or have not performed up to par have new chances in next week’s penultimate event. Double points will be awarded to drag racers for the first time in the second half of the season. With two weeks now left on the 2011 campaign, it’s quickly approaching crunch time for the competitors.
The season’s first and second half points champions will race against one another on August 19 to determine the season’s overall points champion.
