Danny Martin, Jr. swept into the lead from the start of the Eagle Jet Top Gun Sprint feature, and would lead wire-to-wire to score the victory at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL Saturday night.
Martin, Jr. started the night by winning his heat races, with Gene Lasker and Sport Allen also scoring heat wins. Frank Back and Martin, Jr. would share the front row for the start of the feature.
When the green waved, several cars tangled in turn one, with Joe Metcalf flipping, bringing out the red flag. Metcalf was okay, but his night was over.
Back under green, Martin, Jr. lead the way with Allen and Beck lined up right behind him. Martin, Jr. quickly drove off leaving Allen until the caution for D.J. Peeples’ stricken racer. Martin, Jr. would go on to win and pick up the Clean Sweep Award winning a $1,200 Payday. Sport Allen finished in second, with Tyler Godwin third, Billy Boyd, Jr. in fourth and Kerry Gilbert in fifth.
In other action, the first feature on the night was a make up race for the V8 Warriors. Starting on the front row was Bill Whitney and Derek Gray. When the green waved it was Gray leading the way until Whitney spun in turn two bringing out the first caution. Gray would lead the way once again until Jeff Weaver took over the lead on lap three. Weaver would then surrender the lead over to Marco Reyes as they battled lap six, with Reyes leading by a half a car length. Weaver would see his race go away with a spin due to a flat tire. Reyes would go on to win with Kevin Cassaday in second, Tim Stoffel third, Ron Smith fourth and Henry Wiley in fifth.
Next up were the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks. Winning their heats were Brian Morgan and Justan Rodgers and the two also made up the front row for the feature. When the green flag waved, Dennis Wilson, Jr., Morgan and Tim Gay battled for the top spot, with Gay taking the lead. Gay would go on to score the win, with Morgan, Wilson, Jr., Mike Wilson and Buck Woodhouse rounding out the top five.
The Late Model feature was next with David Schmauss and Phillip Cobb winning their heats. Steve Miller would be on the pole with his brother Matt Miller alongside. On the drop ofthe green, Mavrick Varnadore and Steve Miller battled for the lead, with Varnadore taking the spot by a nose. Miller would then get by Varnadore on the next lap and lead until caution came out as Cobb slowed going into turn one, his night over.
Miller then had veteran racers Jackie Nosbisch, Jr. and David Schmauss right behind him on the restart. On lap seven Miller would lead Nosbisch, Jr. to the line by half a car length with Nosbisch, Jr. taking over on lap eight. Several more cautions came out, but it was Nosbisch, Jr. in victory lane at the end of the night. Schmauss finished in second, followed by Matt Miller, Steve Miller and Jamie Slatton.
The Outlaw Four feature was up next, with Billy Howard winning the heat. Jake Hampton and Nick Hebrank would lead the field to green. Jesse James Foster would lead lap one over Hampton. On lap 11, Brandon Yates charged past Foster to take the lead, only to surrender it back to Foster as he went on to win the feature. Yates finished second, with Hebrank in third, Billy Howard in fourth and Megan Meyer in fifth.
The final feature of the night was the second feature for the V8 Warriors. Making up the front row were Bill Whitney and William Suggs. Whitney would lead lap one until Jeff Weaver took over on lap two. Marco Reyes moved to the top spot on lap three. Reyes would have trouble, as he went spinning off turn four off of Weaver’s front bumper, with race officials sending Weaver to the rear of the field. Reyes would go on to win but failed post-race tech. That handed the win to Bill Whitney giving him his first victory of the year. Rounding out the top five were Kevin Cassaday, Tim Stoffel, Jeff Weaver and Bo Anderson.
ASA racing continues next weekend with a 50 lap feature for the Donnie Tanner Memorial Series. Also racing will be the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, V8 Warriors, Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bomber and the Florida Old Time Mods. For more info, visit eastbayracewaypark.com.
