South Alabama Speedway in Opp, AL closed out the regular season Oct. 5 with Season Championship races for the Street Stock and Coyote classes. Gary Davis and Danny Thompson took the checkers in the two extra distance races.
In the Street Stock race, Davis set fast time in qualifying and led all 35 laps to take the win. Billy Maxie chased Davis all race, but couldn’t keep pace with the leader. Davis led Maxie to the stripe by ¾ of a second to take the trophy. Daniel Parker was third with Dennis Thomas fourth. Kyle Sims was fifth.
In the Coyote feature, Thompson got the jump from the outside pole to take the lead on lap one. Fast qualifier Jonathan Johnson started third after the inversion, moved into second on lap five and went to work on the leader. Johnson beat Thompson to the line to lead lap nine, but Thompson fought back to regain the lead on the next lap. The pair battled the rest of the race with Thompson holding Johnson off to take the win. Adam Missildine was third, followed by Lee Rogers and Lee Monaghan.
In the Roadrunner class, Charles Gardner took the lead on lap nine and went on to win. Nick Petrie led the first lap with David Daniels taking over the lead on lap two. Gardner started eighth, but moved into second by lap four. On lap nine, he worked his way past Daniels to take the lead. Daniels didn’t give up and kept the pressure on Gardner, but couldn’t get by to regain the lead. Ricky Strickland finished third, followed by Petrie and Tim Peters.
In the CupLite Feature, Shep Lucas grabbed the lead from the pole and led all 25 laps to take an easy win. Rick Northey was second with Jack Whittle third. Charlie Hercus finished fourth with Lance Blacker fifth.
Keith Hutchinson took the lead with four laps to go to take the Mini Sportsman feature win. Chris Wever led the first three laps before Dylan Wolfe took over the lead. Wolfe led the next 13 laps before Hutchinson made the winning pass. Wolfe followed Hutchinson across the stripe to take second. Donnie Howell was third, Dale McLendon fourth, and Tim Chesser fifth.
South Alabama Speedway will close out the 2013 season on October 19 with the Alabama Pro 125.
The 125-lap Pro Late Model event will bring many of the top Pro Late Model drivers from around the Southeast to South Alabama Speedway. Also on the night’s schedule are 50 lap features for the Modified and Street Stock classes, along with regular features for the Roadrunner, Coyote, and Motorcycles.
