R.A. Brown made the pass on Justin Sorrow with just eight laps left in Friday night’s 50-lap Late Model Stock feature at Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, SC, and motored on to score the victory in the track’s regular season finale.
But Sorrow was far from disappointed, as he scored the 2013 Anderson Late Model Stock championship in the track’s 50th anniversary season.
Sorrow jumped to the early lead, and would hold the position for more of the night. Kenneth Headen moved past Eric Stokes to pick up the second position just two laps in.
But Headen’s night took a major swing on lap 11, when he slowed to a stop on the backstretch, drawing a caution. His crew swarmed on his No. 99, working to find the issue. Just before the feature went back to green, his team fixed the problem, and Headen roared back on track, starting at the back of the field.
Up front, Sorrow would continue to lead. He would hold off challenges from Trey Gibson, who was piloting Randy Porter’s No. 32. Meanwhile, Brown moved to third, and would begin stalking the leaders.
A stumble by Gibson off turn two opened the door for Brown, who powered his way to second, then went to work to track down the leaders.
With 10 to go, Brown was on Sorrow’s back bumper, looking for an opportunity to move to the lead.
With eight to go, Brown got the run he needed, and made the winning pass. Sorrow would finish second, with Gibson in third and Stokes in fourth. Headen would recover from his early race woes to finish fifth.
In other action, the night began with the We being our coverage with the BM Modifieds feature. Casey Tucker charged to the outside as the leaders went three wide. Tucker moved to the lead, with Beanie Gillespie and Austin Northcutt giving chase.
Austin Northcutt brought out the caution on lap two with a spin in turn two, with Chuck Mitchell and Tim Stokes getting collected.
The caution would fly again on the restart, when Mitchell went around off the bumper of Stokes. Both were able to continue.
Mitchell would bring out the yellow again on the next restart by going around in turn two. Northcutt also got a piece of the action, and headed to the pits with a flat right front tire. His crew got the tire changed, and he returned to action.
On the restart, Tucker moved back to the lead, while Shon Gibson went to work on Gillespie, picking up the second position off turn four.
Tucker drove away from the field to score the victory. Gibson finished in second. 2013 BM Modified Champ Austin Northcutt came home in third, with Stokes in fourth and Taylor Marshall in fifth.
The Legends feature was up next, with Cory Parham and Trey Eidson bringing the field to green. Eidson would power out to the early lead, with Parham and Kevin Ellison in pursuit.
Riley Halverson came into the night looking to wrap up the points championship, and would move his way forward over the opening laps. By lap 6, he was following in Parham’s tire tracks, and would move his way around to take second.
With five laps to go, Halverson was all over Eidson for the lead, worrying the leader time after time.
But in the end, it was Eidson holding on to the lead and holding off Halverson to score the win. Halverson finished second to clinch the division championship. Rex Brown finished in third, with Parham in fourth and Randy Gunton in fifth.
David Darnell wanted to make a statement and make it early in the Mini-Stocks feature, as he charged from third to the lead in the opening lap of the feature.
B.J. Thrasher, driving Ken Candiotti’s car, would move to third, and began shadowing the leader. On lap 13, Thrasher got a run at the top spot off turn four, and would make the pass in the first turn.
From there, it was Thrasher’s race, as he led the final laps to score his second straight Mini-Stock victory. Darnell finished in second. Chad Campbell crosses under the checkers in third to lock up the 2013 Mini-Stock championship. Brandon Segars finished in fourth, with Josh Roach in fifth.
The Evergreen Renegades were next on the track, with division points leader Blake Gregory jumping out to the early lead, as Jack Robertson and Steve Gutherie gave chase.
Phillip Peters literally had an engine detonate on lap 5, with a huge lick of flame shooting out from underneath his No. 11 racer as he entered pit road. Race officials put the race under a red flag condition to allow for the clean up of oil left on the racing surface from Peters’ blown engine.
Back under green, Gregory continued to lead with Robertson in second. Gray McJunkin was on the charge, as he and Chris Whitfield went at it for third. McJunkin would come away with the position.
McJunkin would close on Robertson for second, and the two would lean each other as they fought for the spot. McJunkin would make the pass, but Robertson tried a crossover move off turn four, hooking McJuinkin’s racer and sending him into the inside wall, bringing out the caution.
Back under green, Gregory held the lead, with Whitfield in second and McJunkin in third.
McJunkin would move past Whitfield for second late, but it was too little, too late.
Up front, Blake Gregory motored away to score the victory and the division championship for the Evergreen Renegades. McJunkin finishes in second, with Robertson, Whitefield and Charles Sutton rounding out the top five.
The Super Renegades were up next, with Rick Kelley and points leader James Johnson leading the field to green. Kelley swept into the early lead, with Johnson and Barry Tollison, Jr. in tow.
Caution flew on lap one when David Whitaker and Don Morgan spun in turn two, slowing the action.
Back under green, Kelley edged out Johnson for the lead, but Tollison, Jr. was on the move. He made quick work of Johnson, then powered past Kelley for the top spot off turn four.
Tollison, Jr. would stay out front the rest of the night, as he went on to score the victory. Kelley finished in second. James Johnson finished third, wrapping up the Super Renegade championship in the process. Morgan finishes in fourth, with Barry Thornton in fifth.
The Front Wheel Drives wrapped up the final night of regular season racing at Anderson. Tommy Davis and points leader Joey Kelley would do battle on the drop of the green, with Davis getting the lead.
The caution flew early when Chris Huitt and Josh Wells went around in turn two. Wells was able to drive off, but Huitt needed a push to the pits.
On the restart, Tommy Davis moved to the lead, with B.J. Davis grabbing second and Kelley in third.
That’s just where they would stay to the end, as Tommy Davis scored the Front Wheel Drive feature victory. Joey Kelley was originally flagged in second, and appeared to have scored the division championship. But Kelley had trouble in post-race tech, and he was disqualified. That moved B.J. Davis to second, and gave him the 2013 Front Wheel Drive championship. Donovan Beacham finished in third, with Brian King fourth and C.J. Huitt in fifth.
