In his first appearance at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville in 2013, Willie Allen swept both the Limited and Pro Late Model features to make two trips to Nashville’s famed victory lane.
Allen and Mark Day paced the field for most of the night during the 100 lap Hunter Sand and Gravel Pro Late Model feature. The caution flags were out in full force as it seemed like the drivers just couldn’t get settled in. Day and Allen put on quite a show, battling restart after restart. Allen eventually got the best of Day, as he grabbed the lead late in the race. Allen was challenged late by Josh Weston, but was able to hold on and collect the victory. Joseph Meyer finished in third, with Austin Brawley in fourth, and John Bolen in fifth.
Allen stepped into his No. 26 ride looking to take down Steadman Marlin and cash in the $500 bounty placed upon him in the Limited Late Model feature. The two were the class of the field as they broke away from the other competitors. During the closing laps the two were working through traffic when Marlin collided with Duane King, causing him to impact the inside wall. Allen would go on to win the race, but didn’t cash in the bounty money due to Marlin being involved in an accident. Bobby Terry came home in second, followed by Mark Day in third, Blake Williams in fourth, and Junior Weist in fifth.
Nashville saw its biggest car count of the year in the Open Wheel Modified Saturday, with 14 cars entered. A familiar face paced the field early, as Jeff Letson jumped out to an early lead. A late race caution bunched up the field, allowing 2012 Pro Late Model Champion Johnny Brazier to assume the lead. Johnny took his brand new mount to victory lane in his first attempt of 2013. Michael House finished in second, with Jim Wall in third, Brandon Curren in fourth, and Donald Crocker in fifth.
Jeffrey Belt had been knocking on the door all year in the Sportsman division. He finally broke through on Saturday night. The 2012 Sportsman champion won his first race of 2013 after holding off a hard charging Bobby Buttrey. Daniel Bradford finished third, with Billy Schaffer in fourth, and David Lee Brown in fifth.
The Super Street division has been dominated by Robert Forsythe and Bobby Joe Rippey in 2013. Billy Williams got his chance to win on Saturday night. He had the field covered and took the checkered flag, but was disqualified soon after winning. The trophy was awarded to Rippey for his fifth with win of the 2013 campaign. Matt Barnes, Robert Forsythe, Jeremey Newman, and Willie Coats rounded out the top five.
Steve Barnes jumped out to a sizeable advantage early on in the Pure Stock feature. However, Barnes seemed to lose the handle on the car during the late stages of the event, opening the door for Matthew Adams to take the lead. Adams never looked back, capturing his first victory of 2013. Stephanie Barnes finished second, with William Coats in third, Mike Oldham in fourth, and Steve Barnes in fifth.
Kevin Rollins won a competitive but tame Legends feature, his first of 2013. Rollins started fourth, but quickly worked his way through the top three cars to pick up the win. Jeff Young finished second, followed by Preston Young and Wayne Grubb.
Wayne Basket was well on his way to his fifth straight Front Runners victory when he tangled with the lapped car of William Owens on the final lap. The contact sent Wayne into the backstretch wall and back into ongoing traffic, where he was t-boned by Jeffrey Taylor. Travis Owens went on to win the event. Matt Barnes, Jason Taylor, Mason Rochelle, and Terry Duke rounded out the top five.
