Billy Boyd, Jr. would power his way from the pole to score the victory in Saturday Night’s Bob Long Memorial East Bay Sprints feature at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL.

The feature started with Long’s eldest daughter, Elaine Sanders, waving the green flag. Boyd, Jr. jumped out to the early lead, but saw it go away with a lap one caution due to a spin by Rick Byerly in the second turn.

On the restart, Boyd, Jr. felt pressure from Tony Agin, with Kerry Gilbert in third. On lap 11, D.J. Peeples, grandson of Bob Long, spun on the back stretch, bringing out the second and final caution.

On the restart it was Boyd, Jr. led Gilbert and Agin with Tim George and Johnnie Alexander following. However, race officials ruled that Agin jumped to pass Gilbert, and would be penalized. Meanwhile, up front, Boyd, Jr. fought his way through lap traffic and would go on to win the feature.

“I think this is one of my biggest wins in my career,” he said in victory lane. “Last year I had to sit and watch Danny Martin, Jr. win it and thought it would be an honor to win this

Gilbert finished in second, with Tim George in third, Peeples in fourth and Agin in fifth.

In other action the first feature went to the Outlaw Fours. Winning the heat was Jesse James Foster. For the feature it was Megan Meyer and Nick Hebrank making up the front row. When the green flag waved it was Hebrank leading lap one. Meyer’s night took a wrong turn on lap two, with a spin in turn one left Meyer facing the wrong way, drawing the caution. On the restart it was Hebrank leading the field until lap three when Billy Howard took over the lead and never looked back, going on to score the win.

“We finally got the monkey off our back,” said Howard in victory lane. “We were leading the last race and the motor blew up. I was almost ready to sell this and help my dad on his Open Wheel.”

Hebrank finished in second, with Brandon Yates in third, Foster in fourth, and Meyer in fifth.

Next up were the V8 Warriors. Winning their heats were Tommy Hill and Bill Whitney, who also made up the front row for the feature. When the green flag waved it was Hill leading the way from wire-to-wire, winning his second feature of the season. Marco Reyes, Bill Whitney, Derik Rose and Jeff Weaver rounded out the top five.

The final feature of the night was the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Winning their heats were Raymond Vann and William Burnside, and the duo would also make up the front row for the feature. When the green waved it was Vann leading the field into turn one. The only caution of the feature came out on lap 11 for debris in turn one. When the race resumed it was Vann picking up his first win of the year. John Moore finished in second, with Don R. Quinn third, George Handy fourth and William Burnside fifth.

ASA racing continues next weekend with the Late Models, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks, Outlaw Fours and the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. For more information, visit eastbayracewaypark.com.
