After nearly a month off, the wet weather that plagued the southeast was nowhere to be seen Saturday night as racing action finally returned to Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville, the famed Nashville, TN raceway, with Mark Day powering his way to the victory in the Hunter Sand and Gravel Pro Late Model feature.
Two-time Daytona 500 winner Sterling Marlin appeared to have the race in hand, as he led the opening 80 laps of the 100 lap feature. But Marlin’s run of bad luck struck again, and a shock mount broke in the left front on his Tootsie’s Chevrolet. Marlin’s bad luck was good fortune for Day, who inherited the lead and built up a commanding advantage over Josh West.
That lead would go away when Will Brown spun out going down the front stretch with six laps to go, setting up a three lap sprint to the finish. Weston gave Day a run for his money, but was not able to work around him for the win. The win marked Day’s first victory of 2013. With a third place finish, Davey Coble took over the points lead from Marlin, currently holding a ten point advantage. Tucker Wingo and Jake Cole rounded out the top five.
In other action, the Limited Late Models put on one of the most competitive features of the night. Second generation racer Steadman Marlin was able to capture his third straight victory despite coming from the rear of the field due to failing post-qualifying inspection. Allen Carter and Bobby Terry went back and forth throughout the event allowing Marlin to close in. Marlin patiently worked around the two drivers to take the lead with five laps to go. He was able to distance himself and go on to take his third win of the year. Terry finished in second, with Carter in third, John Earheart in fourth, and Ryan Lynch in fight.
It didn’t take long for Brandon Curren to take the lead in the Open Wheel Modified feature, and set sail on Saturday night. Curren started third after the inversion, but made quick work of Jim Wall and Tim Lawson. Curren cruised to his second modified victory of 2013 and padded his commanding points lead. Lawson finished in second, with Wall in third, Rocky Rogers in fourth, and Kenneth Hickman in fifth.
A tight points battle made the fifth race of the Sportsman divison’s season a crucial one. Coming into the night Billy Shaffer, Howard Tucker, and Cody Buford were all within eight points of each other. That battle only got tighter this week. Derrick Johnson stole the night by leading every lap on his way to his second straight victory. The three points contenders all finished inside the top five, leaving them all within just four points of each other. Billy Shaffer now leads Howard Tucker by two points and Cody Buford by four points. Shaffer finished in second, with Jeff Belt was third, Buford was fourth, and Tucker finished in fifth.
The Super Street division had a lot on the line Saturday night. Tony Formosa put up $1000 dollars to win, with a $250 pole award. He also made this a 50 lap feature, adding 20 laps to the usual 30. The man who has dominated the Super Street division, Bobby Joe Rippey, had engine issues during practice on Saturday morning forcing him to have to jump in someone else’s ride. All was well for Rippey as he sat on the pole in his borrowed car, but the race proved to be a little more difficult. It was clear that Rippey didn’t have the handle he wanted on the car as he quickly fell outside of the top 5. Jeff Belt and Robert Forsythe put on quite a battle for the lead. A mid-race caution bunched the field back together again, allowing Robert Forsythe to take his shot at Belt. In what turned out to be a physical battle, Forsythe took the lead from Belt and never looked back. Adam Adcock crossed the line in second, followed by Belt, Jim Jordan, and Jeremy Newman.
The Pure Stock feature was dominated by the Jackson family. The father son duo of Ronald and Terry Jackson ran first and second for the entire night. On this night, the son got the best of the father. Terry Jackson took his second win of the year, matching his father’s win total for 2013. Ronald rolled home in second. Joseph Williams finished in third, with Stephanie Barnes in fourth, and Matthew Adams in fifth.
The Legends division saw many new challengers step up to the plate on Saturday night. However, the winner remained unchanged. David Moyes started third, but it didn’t take him very long to work his way to the front. Moyes went on to win his third straight victory and also broke a tie atop the points standings. Moyes now leads Chad Davis by four points. Chris King finished in second, with Tyler Cordell in third, Davis in fourth, and Kevin Rollins in fifth.
The Front Runner feature was, as always, an exciting one. The field didn’t even make it into turn one before Matt Barnes was sent flying through the air after making contact with Wayne Basket. Barnes was able to land the car and continue in the race. The contact didn’t slow down Basket, as he was able to dominate the field once again to take his third straight win. Jeffery Taylor finished in second, followed by Jason Taylor, Derrick Bissinger, and Stephen Collins.
