Exciting racing continued on Thursday during week two of Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Thursday Thunder, as fans were treated to thrilling side-by-side racing action on the quarter-mile “Thunder Ring.”
The Fun Junction Young Lions feature began with William Byron on the pole position. Alex Coffey moved into the lead on the fourth lap, making an inside pass in turn three, to claim the top spot. Coffey went on to take the win ahead of Woodrow Mullis, who finished second.
Ryan Howell paced the field to start a race among Thursday Thunder’s newer drivers in the Beginner Bandits feature. Nathan Jackson moved to the top spot and led the rest of the way for his second victory of the season.
Eli Bailey led the Outlaws feature to the green flag. Division points leader Ashton Winger quickly took the lead, and a hard-charging Joshua Hicks wasted no time in moving into second place, advancing to the No. 2 spot within two laps after starting at the rear of the field. Winger prevailed, picking up his third feature win in a row to begin the season.
In the combined Masters and Pro feature, Ed Clark held the top spot as the green flag fell. Scott Mosely took the lead on the opening lap. Following a pair of cautions on the fifth and sixth laps, Doug Stevens and William Plemons III claimed the top two spots, battling back-and-forth for a majority of the race before Plemons pulled away with two laps to go to get the win. Skip Nichols was the top finishing Masters driver.
Abigail Marin led the way to begin the Bandits feature before Clay Thompson took the lead. Chandler Smith took the lead on the fifth lap as Zach Leonhardi moved into second place. Smith paced the field the rest of the way to win for the second time this season.
The Allred Family Dentistry Semi-Pro feature started with Hub Talbot leading. Contact between Brett Hardin and Jeff Holden brought out the caution on the first lap. Talbot continued to hold the lead as on the ensuing restart before a spin by Hardin brought out the caution on the fourth lap. Riley Thornton took the lead on the restart and was credited with the win. R.S. Senter finished second with Talbot coming in third.
Short-track racing returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway on Thursday, June 20. Fans will be treated to $1 hot dogs, bags of chips, assorted candy, 12 oz. soft drinks and beer will be sold for $2 as part of the Speedway’s “Thirsty Thursday” promotion. The kid’s candy scramble will also take place.
