With points on the line for the first time this season, a large number of drag racers took to the eighth-mile pit lane drag strip during week five of Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine with hopes of taking a big step toward an overall points championship in their respective division.
The opening of points, like the season opener back on April 26, brought out a lot of new and familiar faces, with some finding more success than others.
One of the best races of the night came from the fastest division at Friday Night Drags in the Super Pro division. Week one winner Michael Ramsey went head-to-head with longtime FND competitor Mike Herring, piloting the popular “Batmobile” Chevrolet. The “Batmobile” would have too many horses under the hood, as Herring pulled away for his first win of the year.
Competition has been very tight across many divisions of Friday Night Drags in 2013, and the Super Pro division has been no exception. Five weeks of racing have produced five different winners, with Herring grabbing an early upper hand in the battle for the points title.
The final round race in the Truck Advanced division was shaping up to be a high-speed duel down the strip between two longtime foes, until a mechanical issue took place on one of the vehicles. Will Coots had lined up in the left lane, taking on Danny Mason, who was racing the “Nuclear Banana” for the first time this season. As Mason completed his burnout, his yellow Chevrolet began to leak water. Unable to make a pass down the strip, Mason had to watch as Coots took a solo run and claimed the win, his second of the year.
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine returns June 7 with week six of the drag racing season, as points will be on the line for the second time in 2013. Grandstand gates open at 6:30 p.m. and nightly drag race eliminations start at 9:15 p.m.
