Scott Dedwylder of Vossburg, MS gave his young car owner who has been going through some serious medical issues a reason to smile Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS when he drove the Jerry Inmon Racing Special to victory in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Salute To The Navy 40.
Dedwylder is filling in behind the wheel of the #38 for the 2012 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Champion Chase Washington of Houlka, MS, who is recovering from major surgery to remove a cancerous portion of his small intestine and undergoing chemotherapy for the next 18 weeks.
“This a special win for me because I can help out Chase and win with his car in front of my hometown fans,” Dedwylder said. “When Chase and his crew chief Joel Murphree asked me to drive this car, all I had to do is get in it, and it is a joy to drive.”
There were several challengers for Dedwylder to deal with over the 40-lap race. Kyle Bronson of Brandon, FL was able to take the lead for one lap. Point leader Ronny Lee Hollingsworth of Northport, AL made a bid for the lead, and Rodney Wing of Meridian, MS challenged Dedwylder late in the race.
But in the end, the high riding Vossburg Vandal was able to keep them all behind him and post the $2,000 win. Wing finished second in the Gas Monkey Garage Special, and Bronson drove the Brandon Ford Warrior to a third-place finish. Two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Jim McDuffie of Meridian, MS was fourth in the McDuffie Racing Trak-Star.
Shep Lucas of McKenzie, AL started 21st in the Boland Performance Trak-Star and finished fifth to earn the Hedman Husler of the Race Award. Hollingsworth faded late in the race and took the sixth spot in the Sparks Motorsports Special. Randy Boyd of Marion, MS was seventh in the Coca-Cola of Meridian Trak-Star.
National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Inductee Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN charged from the 20th starting spot to finish eighth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Special, and Tait Davenport of Benton, KY took a Provisional 22nd starting spot and drove the Murtco, Inc. Special to a ninth-place finish. Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS rounded out the top ten in the Billy Riels Racing GRT.
At the drop of the green flag, polesitter Wing, outside front row starter Dedwylder, and third starting Hollingsworth battled three-wide for the lead for the first two laps before the first of four caution flags came out when two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion David Earl Gentry spun the Eads Farms/Hardy & Associates Warrior in turn four.
Dedwylder was scored as the leader for the first two laps of the race and had Wing and Hollingsworth doubled up behind him for the Dixie-Style Double File Restart. Hollingsworth sailed around the outside of Wing for the second spot on the restart, while Dedwylder opened up a two car-length lead.
Justin McRee of Cottondale, AL brought out the second yellow flag of the race when the High Roller Race Cars Special stalled in turn three on lap four. When the field went back to green flag racing, Wing returned the favor on Hollingsworth to retake the second position, and Bronson moved up to fourth and was on the move.
Bronson built up a head of steam and passed both Hollingsworth and Wing to take the second spot on lap five with an inside move coming off the fourth turn. McDuffie worked his way up to fifth on lap eight. Hollingsworth got to the inside of Wing on lap 15th, and grabbed the third spot coming off turn four.
Caution flag number three for debris lit up the caution bulbs on lap 16. When yellow made way for the green, Bronson got busy and moved up to challenge Dedwylder for the lead. Bronson drove under Dedwylder coming off the fourth turn on lap 17 to take the lead.
Bronson’s tenure on the point was short lived, as Dedwylder sailed around the outside of Bronson in turn two and retook the lead on the next lap.
Wing came back to life for the second half of the race when he drove around the outside of Hollingsworth to move back up to third on lap 21. The fourth and final caution flag came out on lap 23 when Montana Dudley of Phenix City, AL spun the Zaxby’s Rocket in turn three.
Wing got around the outside of Bronson on the restart to climb into the second spot on lap 27, and then set his sights on Dedwylder, who began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 31. Just when Wing moved up on Dedwylder’s back bumper on lap 36, Dedwylder made a move to put two lapped cars between himself and Wing.
Dedwylder then pulled away in the final two laps to take a 1.270 second margin of victory over Wing to the checkered flag. Wing was the Fast Qualifier by out-timing the 49-car field with a lap around the 3/8-mile clay oval in 13.732 seconds.
The four 12-lap Heat Races were won by McDuffie, Jamey Boland of Cuba, AL in the Boland Performance Trak-Star, Boyd and Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS in the Bassett Hound Motorsports GRT. Bronson was the Rookie of the Race, and Evan Ellis of Plantersville, MS earned the Dominator Race Products Hard Luck Award after racing his way into the main event, only to miss the show with mechanical problems with his Ellis Welding Special.
