Korey Ruble picked up his second Viper Series win of 2013 Saturday night at South Alabama Speedway in Opp, AL on Saturday, taking the win in the Diamondback 100. Ruble survived an early race spin, which sent him to the rear of the field, but he charged back to the front and took the lead with 15 laps to go.

Once again, Justin South led the way in qualifying with a lap of 15.371. South didn’t fair too well in the inversion pick, pulling the “5” pill. Brandon Odom, third fastest qualifier, pulled the pole with Hunter Robbins on the outside. Ruble qualified seventh fastest.

Robbins got the jump on Odom on the start to take the lead going into turn one. Ruble advanced to fourth in the first two laps, but spun in turn two on lap three and was sent to the rear of the field. Back under green, Robbins began to ease away from Odom.

Dawsonville, GA’s Spencer Davis was on the move from the ninth starting spot, moving up to third by lap seven. Ruble was back to fifth by lap 15.

Robbins continued to stretch his lead while Ruble was still advancing back through the field. Ruble moved into fourth on lap 34, and moved past Davis on lap 48 to move into third. At the halfway point, Robbins led Odom, Ruble, Davis, and South.

On lap 70, Ruble moved past Odom into second. Robbins enjoyed a sizable lead, but it was soon obvious that Ruble would erase that advantage. Each lap, Ruble moved closer to Robbins’ bumper. He quickly caught Robbins and cut to the inside to take the lead.

Ruble led the final 15 laps to take the win, his third win in three starts at South Alabama Speedway this season. Robbins followed in second, with Odom third, Davis fourth, and South fifth.

In the Street Stock feature, Chad Roberts took the lead with five laps to go, and would go on to take the win. Daniel Parker grabbed the early lead from the pole. Parker led the first three laps before Chris Salter charged into the lead. Roberts, starting ninth, moved quickly through the field, moving up to third by lap nine. Three laps later, he was second and began to cut into Salter’s lead. Roberts caught Salter and made the winning pass with five laps to go. Joseph Chandler went to work on Salter, and grabbed the runner up spot with three laps to go. Salter was third at the checkers, followed by Billy Maxie and Johnny Otto.

In the Roadrunner Feature, David Daniels took the lead after a lap four caution took the front two cars out of the race. Charles Gardner took the early lead from the pole. Ricky Chandler muscled his way inside of the leader in turn one. There was contact, and Gardner returned the favor in turn three, and then again in turn four. The second contact sent Strickland into the wall, ending his night. Gardner was disqualified for rough driving. Daniels, running third, inherited the lead. Tony Tidwell tried to keep pace with Daniels, but Daniels was able to lead the rest of the way. Bubba Deaton finished third, with Tim Peters fifth and Lee Monaghan fifth.

Jonathan Johnson raced through the field, taking just three laps to come from ninth to the lead, and took the win in the Coyote Feature. Brian Missildine led the first two laps, but Johnson made quick work of the leader and pulled away for an easy win. Lee Rogers finished second, Brian Missildine third, Adam Missildine fourth, and Jason Monaghan fifth.

Jack Whittle used a good restart to take the lead on lap 11 and went on to win the CupLite Feature. Jason Fowler took the early lead from the pole and led the first ten laps. Whittle, starting ninth, moved into second on lap nine, just two laps before the yellow waved on lap 11. On the restart, Whittle dove to the inside of Fowler as they headed down the front stretch, taking the lead in turn one. Out front, Whittle eased away from the field to take the win. A lap 23 crash took out Fowler and Mack Byrd, running second and third at the time. Whittle pulled away on the restart to take the win. Lance Blacker was second, followed by Cory Tillman, Carroll Williams, and Waylon Spivey.

In the Mini Sportsman Feature, Keith Hutchinson grabbed the lead from the outside pole and led all 20 laps to take the win. Dylan Wolfe was second, followed by Dale McLendon, Billy Watson, and Chris Weaver.

South Alabama Speedway will be silent for the next two Saturday as it prepares for its 40th Birthday. The track opened on June 9, 1973.
