Defending Newnan Bonding B Cadet points champion Thomas Mewborn of Greenville put on a clinic Saturday night at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA.  Mewborn taught his fellow racers how to use the top groove around the 3/8 mile to take home the hardware.  Mewborn topped a strong field including Alabama’s Roger Arnett to win his main event.  He and Arnett ran side by side for several laps battling for the top spot.

Joining Mewborn in victory lane were Bobby ‘Wild Child’ Arnold of Newnan winning the Mini Stock feature, Roopville’s Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Villa Rica’s Todd Brewster in the Modified Mini and Woody Callaway topping the vintage cars.  The feature races for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models and Bombers were rained out and will be made up on May 18.

Mewborn’s victory was by far the sweetest for everyone in attendance.  He kept his car on the high side the entire race allowing Arnett to get side by side with him in the corners, but then using the momentum of the upper groove to scoot past on the straights.  The feature was slowed twice for a pair of spin-outs by Alabama’s Kelly Leonard and Stockbridge’s Jeff Carter.  The restarts would allow Arnett to gain a little ground, but Mewborn would slam the door shut both times.

Mewborn recorded his first win of the season ahead of Arnett.  Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland was third with Kelly Leonard charging back to finish fourth ahead of Stockbridge’s Billy ‘The Kid’ Stevenson.

“This is gift for my fiance’ and family,” said Mewborn in victory lane.  “We are getting married next Saturday.”

Bobby Arnold overtook McDonough’s Bailey Temples on lap six of the Mini Stock main event and then cruised to his second feature win of the season.  Hampton’s Mark ‘Mad Dog’ Newton fought hard, but could only muster a runner-up spot to Arnold’s machine.  Griffin’s Alex Rudolph finished third in his first race ever at Senoia.  Griffin’s Bubba Hicks and Hampton’s Brandon Brock rounded out the first five.

Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran picked up his forty-fifth career feature win after rolling past Covington’s Sam ‘Bam’ Carter early on in the Summit Racing Equipment feature.  Newnan’s Marcus Caswell would give the chase, but ran out of time in catching Moran.  Rookie Ben Steele of Franklin ran third.

Woody Callaway returned to Senoia Raceway where he raced for years in the late 70’s and early 80’s.  Callaway piloted his vintage Chevy sedan modified to a victory over Perry’s Randy Woodland and his 1966 Ford Falcon.  Crowd favorite Fred Herron of Newell, AL, finished third in his 1964 Ford Mustang.

“I raced here for years,” said an excited Callaway afterwards.  “Then they ruined it when they put the asphalt on it.  Glad to see it is back to dirt.”

Todd Brewster outlasted the field of Modified Mini.  Brewster led Sharpsburg’s Robbie Scadron and Villa Rica’s Allen Brewster when they both lost power on lap seven.  As Scadron and Allen Brewster slowed, fourth place runner Heath Brewster of Bremen ran into the back of them resulting in all three cars exiting to the pit area.

This Saturday, May 18, Senoia Raceway will make up the pair of rained of features for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models and Bombers.  It is also the three night series opener for the Jewel Series which offers double features for all divisions.  With last week’s rain outs, the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models will run a pair of 20-lap mains paying a full purse for both races.  The Bombers will run two separate 15-lap main events and will also receive a full purse for both races.  The Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Modified Mini will run double features with a split purse since their features were completed this past Saturday. All races will award points for the Jewel Series title, as well as, count towards the drivers season point total.

“It will be twice the racing and twice the fun for the same low ticket prices,” said promoter Tim Moses.  “The Jewel Series is a lot of fun as it is just feature racing with points and money on the line.  You just draw for position and race.”
