Korey Ruble continued his winning ways at South Alabama Speedway in Opp, AL on April 13, opening defense of his 2012 Viper Series Championship, by winning the 2013 Viper Series opening Sidewinder 100. Ruble opened the season with a win in the Grasshopper Pro Late Model 125, Presented by JR’s Lawnmower shop.
As has been the norm, Justin South was fastest in qualifying, turning a fast lap of 15.234. Inversion put Hunter Robbins on the pole with Kyle McCallum lining up on the outside. South started from the fourth starting spot. When the green flew, Robbins jumped out front to grab the lead, with Brandon Odom following from the inside second row. South worked his way past McCallum on lap seven to move into third. Ryan Redmon followed South past McCallum to take the fourth spot.
On lap 19, Odom moved to the inside of Robbins to take the lead. With Robbins up a groove, South and Ryan Redmon were able to move into second and third the next lap. On lap 24 South made his bid for the lead, taking Redmon with him. A quarter into the race, South led Redmon, Odom, Robbins, and Ruble.
Odom worked his way back around Redmon on lap 27. A few laps later, Redmon slapped the front stretch wall and began to fade back through the field. Ruble was beginning to make his way forward, moving past Robbins and Redmon to move into third on lap 34. When the race’s only caution flew on lap 41, South led Odom, Ruble, Robbins, and Kyle Plott. The running order remained that way at the crossed flags, with South pulling out to a sizable lead.
On lap 58, Ruble got by Odom to move into second and began to cut into South’s lead. That lead was quickly erased as South slowed coming out of turn four on lap 69 with rear end problems. Robbins had just passed Odom and moved into second with South retiring to the pits. With 25 laps to go, Ruble held a four car length lead over Robbins. Odom was third, followed by Plott and McCallum.
Robbins closed Ruble’s lead over the next 15 laps, getting to within a half car length of the leader. But that was close enough for Ruble, who stepped up his pace and pulled away over the remaining ten laps to take the win. Odom followed in third with Plott fifth and Russell Fleeman fifth.
Using a different car, Donald Crocker backed up his Rattler win, leading all 25 laps to win the Modified feature. Crocker won the Rattler Feature in his family-owned # 5, but Saturday he was in the #99 that he pilots at times. Crocker started from the outside pole, but outraced Jacob Permenter to turn one to grab the lead. Once out front, Crocker was never contested for the lead. Team mate Brandon Howell put a little pressure on Crocker, but couldn’t mount a serious challenge for the lead. Brandon Odom was third, followed by Heath Mills and Mario Lupi.
Gary Davis picked up his first win in several years at South Alabama Speedway, taking the lead on lap 15. Daniel Parker grabbed the early lead from the pole position and led the first two laps before Billy Maxie took over. Maxie led for five laps with Brandon Odom worked his way inside to take the lead on lap nine. Odom led through two cautions, but Davis got inside on a lap 14 restart and completed the pass the next lap. Odom and Maxie’s night both ended when a wheel broke on Maxie’s car and he collected Odom. Both hit the back stretch wall and were done for the night.
From there, Davis was able to pull away from the pack as Chris Salter and Joseph Chandler were battling for the runner up spot. Davis eased to the stripe with Chandler getting past Salter on the final lap to take second. Johnny Otto was fourth with Adam Salter fifth.
In the Roadrunner feature, teammates Ricky Strickland and David Daniels battled for the top spot until Strickland fell off the pace during a lap 20 caution period. Strickland led the first 19 laps, holding off Daniels for several laps before heading to the pits.
Daniels took the point and cruised to the win. Tony Tidwell was second. Nick Petrie and Davin Allen battled for the third spot for much of the race. Petrie got loose a couple of times trying to get past Allen but made it stick on the final lap to grab the spot. Tim Peters finished fifth.
In the Coyote feature, Lee Rogers was cruising out front when he slowed on lap 19 and headed to the pits. Danny Thompson, started ninth, and had moved into second on lap 17. Thompson took over the lead when Rogers slowed and led the final six laps to take the win. Johnathan Johnson came from the 12th starting spot to finish second. Rusty Locklar finished third, followed by John Musgrove and Ralph Sanders.
Eddy Hinson took the lead on lap 13 and went on to win the Mini Sportsman feature. Donnie Howell led the first three laps from the pole. Paul Gay grabbed the lead on a lap four restart and led until Hinson took over nine laps later. Howell was second with Dylan Wolfe third. Duke Weaver and Tim Chesser rounded out the top five.
