Frankie Beard pocketed $2,000 worth of ice cream money with a win Saturday night for the FASTRAK City Chevrolet Touring Series at Gordon Park Speedway in Grovetown, GA, as he scored the victory in the FASTRAK Spring Nationals.
Gib Gibbons would start his night by setting fast time, and received his first ever FASTRAK Pole for a Touring event. The drivers turned around the 3/8th mile in 14.105 seconds.
After a multiple redo on the official start of the feature, the field got stacked almost three wide exiting off the third corner. Athens, Georgia’s Danny Sanders got cross checked and shot into the infield to bring out the first caution. With another shot at the restart the race was halted by the yellow flag again when Danny Sanders and Taylor Hicks went three wide with Ron Parker pinned in the middle. Parker was able to scamper away white the other two spun.
Another issue occured on lap 13 when Brian Conner jumped the cushion in turn three, sending his car shooting up the track with the entire left side getting airborne.
Meanwhile Gibbons was the man out in front until until lap 17, Beard took advantage of the choose rule on a restart and at the green was able to get a run on the bottom of Gibbons entering turn one. Beard would move out front, much to the crowd’s appreciaton.
The caution would fall one last time when spun on the backstretch. On the final restart Gibbons and Parker tried to but could not find a way around Beard as he scored the victory.
The win not only gave the “Ice Cream Man” a $2,000 pay day, but it also marked his first FASTRAK Touring Series victory.
