Montgomery Motor Speedway in Montgomery, AL, kicked off their 2013 season on April 6 with a bang. The FourStar Freightliner Demolition Derby was the headline event of the night, and it saw ten cars compete for the $1000 winning prize. The excitement of a Demo Derby, Motorcycles, Kid’s Bicycle Races, and four classes of stock cars brought out a near sellout crowd to the famed half-mile.
Fans became part of the action as they voted by applause for the best appearing Demolition Derby car. The award, $100, was won by the #911 FourStar Freightliner entry driven by Skipper Davis.
The Montgomery Motor Speedway pit road was blocked off, and a concrete truck full of soap and water was pumped out into the Derby area while the field of Derby cars entertained the crowd with burnouts and revving engines on the speedway.
Once the arena was set, the Derby cars rolled in. Entries varied from old large Buicks, to station wagons, and even a hearse. Unfortunately for Roger Wood, Jr., his hearse entry failed to make the green flag with engine woes.
John Sutherland’s left-rear tire blew and came completely off the rim. He was dead in the water, only able to sit and spin his wheels, and unable to move. He went out in third, and it was down to the final two competitors, the station wagon driven by Jason Haigler and his final competitor, Chris White. Haigler was able to deliver the finishing blow to take victory in the first Demolition Derby in many years at Montgomery Motor Speedway.
The Southern Motorcycle Asphalt Racing Series was back in action as well. In their 6 lap Dash For Cash Rob McClendon and Davo Majzun battled side-by-side on the final lap, ending in a photo finish with McClendon taking the win.
In the feature, it was McClendon once again out front, but this time, John Cohorn, on a McClendon owned backup bike after his primary had mechanical woes, was the one chasing down the leader. Lap traffic played a role when Cohorn attempted a dive to the inside and got caught up by the traffic, allowing McClendon to hold on for his first victory at Montgomery. Davo Majzun held on for yet another third place finish.
In Super Stock/Truck action, Darrell Cawley took his Super Stock car from the pole and led flag-to-flag over a fast Truck, with Cameron Berry behind the wheel. The podium was rounded out by Shelby Reuse in third.
In the Mini Modified division, defending champion Joel Collier started off his 2013 campaign in victory lane. Charlie Melvin, making his return to racing after a few year hiatus came home second, with the Mini Mod truck of Lance Campbell rounding out the top three.
The Buzz division was a two-horse show. A great battle between Joshua Wood and Perry Patino as they nearly lapped the field. Patino made a last-ditch effort on the final lap but fell just short of the checkers. Wood held on for the win. John Musgrove took third in front of defending champion Floyd Brown in fourth, and Tim Grace rounded out the top five.
Defending Street Stock Division champion, Joe Bethea, Jr. found victory lane, but it wasn’t easy. Cody McCawley, making his first career start in a full sized stock car, started on the pole and led the first nine circuits before Bethea was finally able to make a move around him. Bethea took over, and led the rest of the way, holding off a charge from fast qualifier DeWayne Wesenberg to take the checkers. David Wood came home third, with McCawley winding up fourth, and Daniel Jacks rounding out the top five.
Montgomery Motor Speedway returns to action on April 20, with twin Pro Late Model features, along with racing from the Street Stock, Mini-Modified, Buzz, and Vintage National divisions. Visit montgomeryspeedway.com for more info.
